As a kid, I often refer to all animations as cartoons. Now, I refer to them as animes. But really, whats the difference? I think anime and cartoons are the same.. they're both animations. Any ideas?

well, just like the other said. anime is japanese way to call cartoon. although, i think anime's drawing is a bit different than cartoon. For example, sponge bob and nickelodeon have their unique way of drawing characters compare with avatar or naruto.

Its just a way in which Japanese refer. they call cartoons as anime and comics as manga. there is not a large difference in them...

In the US, I think we tend to use the word anime to refer to those animations that are created in Japan.

Anime are mostly from Japan. Anime usually came from its own manga. Cartoons usually focuses on comedy(well mostly). Anime focuses on physical appearance, drama, romance and lots of things. And basicly, the graphics for anime are a lot better than cartoons. Well thats only my personal thoughts.... I rarely watch cartoons anyway.

anime is is a certain art style compared to cartoons. Tehy also tend to reflect on more serious subjects. Not saying all animes are serious and devoid of goofyness, there are some afterall that are just silly. Your answer though is this... Compare naruto and spongebob, you'll have your answer. teen titans and avatar the last airbender for instance are anime, but simpsons and family guy are cartoons.

I think there is no difference between the two. Anime is just a shortened word for animation. Just the same thing, anyway, called in another way.

I usually use the term Anime for animations from Japan, and Cartoon for the animations from the other countries. I also think its basicly the same thing.

MUAHAHAHA this question i love! To me there are really only 2 things that distinguish an anime from a cartoon. Fingers - Yes fingers are very important, if you watch a tv show(whether it be a anime or cartoon) you can always tell if it is more for kids or for teens by the number of fingers on their hands. Anime generally has 5 fingers on their hands while cartoons usually have 4. Realism - Although fingers kind of ties into this, the way the animator creates a cartoon is really quick, and has a bit of detail in it. Anime however has alot of detail to it(compared to a cartoon). For example, if you look at the hair in a cartoon, you will see it is really just sort of one object and all connects to itself. If you watch anime, hair will be more free flowing and natural(again compared to a cartoon)
