Anime and Cartoon, What's the Difference ?!

As a kid, I often refer to all animations as cartoons. Now, I refer to them as animes. But really, whats the difference? I think anime and cartoons are the same.. they're both animations. Any ideas?

nanosec well, just like the other said. anime is japanese way to call cartoon. although, i think anime's drawing is a bit different than cartoon. For example, sponge bob and nickelodeon have their unique way of drawing characters compare with avatar or naruto.
