On the Today Show this morning there was a very disturbing segment (at least to me it was) describing the inhumane method that animals (dogs also included) were actual skinned alive for their fur. I have for many years refused to wear furs as a fashion statement but I have worn faux fur lining. I actually bought a new jacket with faux lining last September now I find that faux fur is NOT faux it is from animal who not important enough for the fashion world to be labeled as real, mink, sable, etc. This really upsets me and I hope it also upsets other animal lovers.
I am giving the link to this story so that the person who responded to my discussion regarding what is in processed dog as bullsheet can check it out.
Please given me your opinion?WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Many fur or fur-trimmed jackets sold in the United States as having "faux fur" -- or not labeled at all -- are actually made, at least in part, from dog fur, the Humane Society of the United States said at a Capitol Hill news conference Wednesday.
Out of 25 jackets that it tested, the group said, 24 were incorrectly labeled. In many cases, it said, tests showed the fur came from raccoon dogs, a fox-like nocturnal residents of Asian and northern European forests that bear a remarkable resemblance to raccoons.
Raccoon dogs are part of the canine family.
It said it had bought the jackets in the United States from a variety of department stores, including Macy's, Burlington Coat Factory and J.C. Penney. Designers and brands included Sean John, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger, it said. Most of the jackets tested were labeled as coming from China. (Watch Humane Society spokesman explain where the fur comes from)
Law prohibits the import or sale of dog and cat fur products. But if the amount of fur on a product is valued at less than $150, no label is required.
The Humane Society said that it is in discussion with many of the department stores that sold the garments it tested, and several had pulled such products from their stores when shown the group's findings.
In a statement posted on its Web site, the Humane Society said its ongoing investigation into fur products found:Dog fur sold online as "faux" by several major retailers.
Mislabeled or unidentified raccoon fur on other jackets.

I feel the same way you do. I do not wear real fur and often will get faux fur. Just recently I bought a jacket with fuax fur around the wrists and neck of the coat. I fell in love with this coat and was pleased at the sale price and ordered it online. When I recieved it I noticed the label inside said real fur. I went back to the add re-read it wondering if I had missed someone but no it said faux fur. So I contacted the company and told it was a mix of real and faux fur. I was devestated, no returns accepted and being on a budget its not like I could go out and buy a new coat and being that we have had a lot of snow going coatless is not a possiblity. This has bothered me to no end. When my daughter felt it she joked and said its boarder collie fur and I said nah probably racoon. So after reading your link I feel even worse about the coat.

I saw this on Today and was just amazed! I knew that they did this to cats and dogs in China because I had seen a special on it but I had no idea they were selling it as "faux fur" too until the scoop came in on Today.
I posted a discussion on this myself, hence how I found yours! LOL Sorry! But I had to share your reaction... amazing indeed!

Mt daughter and I would never buy or use any product with animal fur. This has been our policy for very many years.
Your story reminds of the fur seal situation, where we capaigned long & hard to cease this disgusting practise, where they are skinned alive.
I hope the person who wrote the stupid comment regarding dog food, reads your discussion properly & views the artcle.

Thank you Jenny. I remember the baby seal cubs problems. If I remember correctly Brigitte Bardot the French movie star was a big advocate against killing the babies for their fur.

Thank you for posting this. I am sure most people would never know this. I do know that there is actual synthetic fur that is used for faux fur. It is sad that any animal lose their fur for our clothing.
I commend the stores that pulled the products when they learned the truth. It shouldn't take an outside organization to explain things to stores.
As far as the Humane Society ... I do have issues with some of their practices and things they promote; but overall they do care enough to try to protect animals.

I have a jacket that has "faux fur" on it. I bought it from A merican Eagle. I had no idea that faux fur could be real. I have no way of finding out if my jacket is using real fur because I bought it months ago. I don't wear it anymore. I hope that it is not real.

When I was "googling" this topic I came across some sites that explained how you could tell the difference.

See this is why I did not want to buy any fur because I never knew where it came from.

That is just horrible! How can that even be legal? That needs to change. i say PETA (even though i have come to disrespect that organization) should get after the government and get that changed.

That is absolutely ridiculous... How can they get away with something like that... It's like when I ordered a veggie burger from burger king, and they put bacon on it... 3 times. People are just ignorant.

I have never heard of faux fur until now. However, from those tests, it is misleading. I feel bad for many of those people who ended up buying it that thought they were getting fake fur. Not only the animal right activists, but there are sometimes medical reasons for buying fake fur, one of them being allergies. It is usually the fur that triggers allergic reactions when people are allergic to dogs or cats.

I think what some people do to our animals for the sake of fashion is disgusting, and I don't think most people have no idea what is actually going on, I have belonged to many animal societies and the things that is going on make me sick...people should stop buying anything that even remotely looks like fur...why are people so cruel....

Wow! Thanks for giving us the heads up! It just reminds us that there will be someone finding new ways to get around the rules! You have to watch out for everything! I've always had a problem with furs, but tend to forget about it. It takes SO MANY skins to make a coat! And mink are not used for anything else, I don't think! Ugh...terrible thinking about it all.

I didn't know that faux fur was real either and I also refuse to wear or buy fur so I'll definitiely remember this. I can't see why anyone would need to buy fur. If it's warmth you're after, there are wonderful down coats that can't be beat. For style, nothing beats a beautiful cashmere coat in a basic color like black or camel. No, I won't find it any harder to avoid faux fur than it is to avoid the real labelled stuff.

OH MY GOSH. Thank you so much for telling me. I just knew there was a reason that I have never bought the faux fur. To me it felt weird, like I was cheating or something. I get all strange feeling when I touch it. That is absolutely horrible. I will not wear any part of an animal. (knowingly)

The picture of the girl with the hood, looks like real fur to me. I have a few faux fur things but the are distinctly fake, I don't buy things that are labeled anything fur, truely fake fur should be listed as polyester or another similar material and should feel the same a the fur on a teddy bear or something.
