I doubt there will be many big new steps in the evolution of a chimp. Like us they seem to be pretty stable evolutionarily. Changes in a species happen little by little over a huge period of time. It is very unlikely that we will see them walking completely upright in our lifetime or our children's lifetime.
In order for something to become an evolved trait it must be passed down from one generation to another over many generations. Because chimps today are perfectly adapted to their environment they will continue to pass on the traits that they currently possess. If there were ever a mutation or a unique trait that made a certain individual more adapted to their environment and that individual were to pass those traits on to their offspring, over a great length of time you could see some type of evolution.

Next step? What was the first step? Any documented evidence?

i heard that a troupe is hunting with spears.
Watch footage of a female chimp caught in the act of removing a spear from a tree hollow and then breaking the tree to recover her prey, a primate called a bush baby.

the next step would be fighting each other with spears if they follow our path of evolution, or begin to walk upright, i'm not sure.
