Do you always wear your seatbelt? Why or why not?

I just saw another ad on TV about increased enforcement of seatbelt laws in my state. I always wear my seatbelt and insist that those riding with me do as well. I have seen too many terribly injured people at the hospital who weren't wearing their seatbelt. Do you wear yours? Why or why not?

I didn't used to wear my seatbelt when I lived in Kansas. I moved to New Mexico and the law here is, they can pull you over for not wearing it. I got pulled over for it and slapped with a $50 ticket. Now I always wear it! Last July I got in a car and there wasn't a seatbelt so I couldn't put it on. On the way back from the store we got into a nasty accident. I was in the front passanger seat and I flew up and hit my head on the front DRIVER's side of the windshield. I will not ride in cars without seatbelts anymore!

You could try this, it would adjust where the seatbelt lies. I know it says it is for kids but it will work for an adult too.

Here is a padded one if the other would cut into you

I hope this helps you to wear your seatbelt, it is really important to wear it!

I honestly don't see why someone wouldn't want to wear a seatbelt. Some people have told me..Well, I'm a great driver so I don't need it. I respond..What about everyone else on the road? Are they great drivers too? I can't think of 1 legitimate excuse not to wear one. I'm glad the law was put in place...especially now that people are on cell phones, texting, IPods, TVs, too many distractions in their cars, let alone on the road.

Oh yes. The use of cell phones and other paraphenllia (sp?) really bugs me. Again, many of the accident victims I care for admit to having been using a device of some sort and just 'lost control'

I confess, I do not wear my seatbelt. I'm a large person, so when I put the seatbelt on, it rides up so that it is across my throat. I've tried pulling the belt out to try to get it to lock a little more loosely--never works. I've tried putting a fabric cover on the belt--still chokes me. I've even tried a seatbelt extender. Unfortunately, the extender does not change the way that the shoulder belt lies across your body.

I always wear mine. My kids do, too. I have to admit that the town I was raised in is a small country town of 500 people and when we are there visiting my parents, we don't buckle up if we go to the store or something. I know that we can still get a wreck and all, but I guess it's just a habit. But, in the town I live and then if we go somewhere for shopping or whatever, we are all buckled.

I always wear my seat belt and encourage everyone else in the vehicle to do so as well. I would have done so regardless of any legal requirement. There have been far too many accidents that have proven the safety issue regarding seatbelt usage and I just don't take chances with safety.

I always wear my seatbelt and insist that others who ride with me wear theirs too. I won't pull out of the driveway (or wherever) if they're not buckled up. Like you, I've seen many unfortunate cases in the ER whose injuries probably wouldn't have been as bad if they had their seat belts on at the time of their collision. I think it's important to protect ourselves as well as we can.

Yes,we wear them, because it is the law. We started wearing them before it was the law in Indiana. We were in Wisconsin with our four-year-old many years ago, and they had a seat belt law then. Our son would be the one to remind us to put them on, I think because it was such a novel idea to him! We kept using them even after we returned home.

Yes always! 12 years ago the state of florida made it mandatory and I lived in that state at the time. One year later I moved to Mississippi where did not have this law and no one buckled up which really bothered me. Now the state of MS has made it mandatory but I still see many people hop in the car and never buckle up. The ones I see doing this are the wild crazy irratic drivers too. It is now just a normal procedure when getting in the car. I do it before I crank the car.

After so many years of carseats, boosters and "put your belt on" I just do it without even thinking about it anymore. It just does not even cross my mind not to wear it. Strange how it has just become such a habit. I think I would feel wierd without one.

Yeah, I always do. I would still do it even if it wasn't the law. I was in a car crash a number of years ago and the only thing that saved me from going through the windshield was my seatbelt. I had a massive diagonal bruise from shoulder to waist and the doctor who saw me said "Show that bruise to all your friends and let them know that it was your seatbelt that saved you"

I always wear the seatbelt and I make everyone in the car I am driving use it too. I am not paying a ticket for someone because they didn't feel like using their seatbelt. The driver is responsible for all riders in the car. EIther you use the seatbelt or get out and take the bus.

Yup, that is just what I tell them too! I'm not going to pay a fine because they refuse a seatbelt! And, I don't want to live withthe memory of seeing them splattered over the windshield either!

yes I always do and I wont drive the car away until everyone has theirs on too , Here in Scotland they is a hefty fine if you are caught without it on and I for one think that is a brilliant idea , too many kids and adults have been thrown through the windscreen because they were not wearing one , good discussion my friend xx

Yes, I where my seatbelt. My dad has a friend who went through the windshield. It took him a long time to recover and he still has many scars on his face to show his experience with everyone.
My kids always are buckled and it seems a bit hypocritical for me to say you HAVE to wear yours but I don't. Why, the law is we ALL have to wear them in my state.

Well I must admit I never wear it or if I do I put the shoulder strap behind me. I can't stand it going across my neck. I think I would be beheaded if I hit something. I know it's safer to wear one but not if it's going to kill you...lol I will check out the "do dad"..lol I think I'll see what walmart has to offer as I am going there later. Thanks for the discussion it is a good one.

I started to wear my seatbelt, so I didn't have to pay a fine if I got caught. My mom begged me for years to wear it. I laughed her off. Now, I am afraid to NOT wear it. It has become such a habit, and is also habit to my whole family.

I was in a really serious car accident back in 1995 where I was almost killed. I never made a big deal about seatbels before that. But, since that happened to me I never go anywhere in the car without making sure I buckle up.

No. I never wear one. My mother was killed in 94 from wearing a sealt belt, and I was in the car. So that kinda got to me. I do understand that does not happen too often, but I have not wore one since then. And I have never gotten a ticket for not wearing one either. I know I should wear one.
