Smoking at work

Where I live and work there hasn't been a "no smoking" ordinance put in public places. Yet. I smoke in my office, but I am considerate about it. I have an air purifier, leave the backdoor open and put out my smoke when I see someone pull up and usually spray some Oust. My ashtray is in my desk drawer so no one has to see it. A lot of times I am here alone and can't go out back to smoke. I think I'm fairly considerate in not imposing my habits on other people, and yes, I've tried to quit and i'm sure I'll try again. Anyway, the home office just sent a memo to all the agents in our district saying we shouldn't be smoking in our offices as it leaves a bad impression on our clients. I have never had one person say anything to me in my office that it smells like smoke, or complain. Should I just toss this memo and not worry about it? Or should I take it serious and not smoke here anymore? What do you think?

Did the memo say an absolute zero tolerance for smoking in the office? If not smoke outside when you can and continue what your doing now if you can't. I live in a state where it is banned almost everywhere. And now they are complaining the state is losing money because people aren't smoking as much lolol

Well I wouldn't worry about it then. I smoke too but with all our smoking bans I just stay home.

We are all independant agencies so they give us guidelines for the way they's like to see our offices conducted, but ultimately the decision is up to the individual. I understand that some people find smoking offensive so I go out of my way to "hide" that it goes on here. No one has said anything so I think i'm just gonna keep going the way I am until someone says something.

I would take it seriously as your job might be at risk if you don't take that advice.

That's the thing, I see my district manager once every 6 months, and we usually don't even meet at my office since he's 90 minutes away, we meet somewhere in the middle. No one (except my mom) even knows I smoke here. I've atually had clients come in and comment on how nice my office smells. It's the freshly sprayed Oust, but hey, if they like it who am I to rat myself out? LOL

Well it might not have been directed at you as such it could have been directed at someone that is not as considerate as you are But I would be more careful though as they might be watching everyone. They could send one of their own in as a Customer. So be careful

i think it would be better u take the memo seriously and not smoke in the office anymore.. here in india the offices have a smoking zone where u r allowed to smoke, but definitely not in the office.. if u have gotten away with it till now,its ur luck but be careful from now on..

I encourage you strongly to try and quit. It is a horrible habit that really does kill you every time you put one in your mouth. Thankfully, in Connecticut, smoking is banned in public places. I hate second hand smoke. It is just as bad, and kills children every day. I find it horrible that anyone would want to do something like smoking to themselves or others. Here's a nice gallery of what your lung might look like now. http://tinyurl.com/2f5dwl

Last time I tried to quit I copied pictures of the nasty lungs and hung them all over as a reminder. Unfortunately it didn't work. Thanks for the link though. :)

Smoking is one reason why my father had a stroke. ;)

There is a no smoking restriction where I work, but this is imposed by the company and not the authorities. We have a small hut that was erected outside the building for people to go and smoke, so nobody could possibly complain about the presence of smoke. It has been discussed several times by the authorities that they are considering imposing a ban on smoking in public places, which is almost certain to become reality in time.

I see no problem with you smoking in your office providing you take the considerate approach that you describe, so I would not worry too much about the memo unless it becomes a strict ruling. The majority of companies now have a restriction on smoking, and the company that I work for insists that smoking on the premises is totally banned. They have erected a shed outside for anyone who wishes to smoke, which is very basic and obviously designed as a deterrent.

I feel you should take your home office's memo seriously and not smoke inside your office. It is not about you , it is just a general rule like wearing formals to office or working 8 hours daily.... nothing is directed specifically to you yet we always stick to rules if they are set by the company we work for or represent. Agreed that you are careful and sensitive it is just another rule that you need to follow so square your shoulders and just do it no harm it will also help you cut out the number of ciggarettes you smoke daily! Best thing you can do to yourself. Peace
