The fish are starting to spawn here in East Texas. We were Channel Cat fishing Sunday and they were all full of eggs. This made me think about when the children were young and we would take them Bream or Perch fishing. On several occasions we would come upon hugh beds of Bream in shallow water. You could see the round hole that had been fanned out and eggs laid in the beds. Each nest had a male fish stationed over it guarding the nest. But, they would not bite. You could drop a worm right on that old male and he wouldn't touch it. Then we read an article in a fishing magazine that the males would not bite while guarding beds but, if you would just let the hook settle into the bottom of the bed that he would go down and pick it up to keep the bed clean. As soon as he picks it up give a little jerk and 9 out of 10 times you will hang him. We tried it and it worked ever time. Our family loves fried Bream but it was alwas tedious to have to bone the Bream for the children. With this technique we hooked big male Bream from 1 lb. to 1 1/2 lbs. Large enough to fillet and thus no bones. Has any one ever tried this?

Yes I have tried the empty hook method, but after a while of doing this it accured to me that by doing this that I was hurting the fish population greatly. First I was takeing a healthy male out of the population, which means that the nest would be eaten by either less healthy fish or would get covered up by the debree from the current and would die either way. So I decided instead of killing 40-75 fish "1 male plus all the babies" just to catch on fish "the 1 male", that I would ty and catch the odd ball males and females that were trying to rade the nest "inso helping the fish population. :) that and the empty hook method seemed like I was cheating :)

I do not have fishing as a hobby. In fact, I find it rather cruel to fish and then eat it. It is not that I do not eat fish, I eat fish purchased from the market. You may say it is the same, yes, I am just kidding myself, making myself at ease because I did not do the fishing myself. LOL.
