Actually Nikolas Tesla in the 1800's had this idea. however from what i understand he was unable to get financial backing to be able to prove his theory to the world.
in the late 1890's Tesla actually transmitted 100 million volts of high-freq electric power wirelessly over 26 miles which lit up 200 light bulbs and ran one electric motor!
rumors say that Tesla's direct competetor, Edison, was very friendly with the most, if not all, of the potential investors that Tesla sought. and after getting money from one guy and actually building a structure...the money was suddenly pulled out and the building was destroyed.
Edison and his legacy (the world)wouldnt be what it is today if Tesla had been able to keep his financing and shown the world a faster, cheaper and more efficient way to provide electricity.
