Do you think this sentence is harsh enough? I think this is a crime that deserves the death penalty!
Woman Pleads Guilty to Beheading Girl
Thursday, March 15, 2007(03-15) 07:27 PDT Seattle (AP) --
A mentally troubled woman accused of drowning her 6-year-old daughter, cutting off her head and throwing the remains off a bridge has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Under a plea agreement accepted Wednesday, prosecutors will recommend a 23-year prison term for Samara Laverne Spann, 32. Sentencing was set for May 18.
Spann has undergone several mental evaluations since she was charged in June 2005 with killing her daughter, Kyeimah, whose remains were never found.
Spann told investigators she was using drugs heavily at the time of the killing, officials have said.
Spann's father, Gary Spann, told The Sacramento Bee in 2005 his daughter routinely called the girl a "devil child," and she belonged to a cult that worshipped the late rapper Tupac Shakur as the reincarnation of the 16th century political philosopher Machiavelli.
She also was upset because her daughter kept getting out of bed and interrupting a telephone conversation, according to the court filings.
Spann told investigators she drowned the girl in the bathtub of their home south of Seattle on Dec. 31, 2004, or Jan. 1, 2005, after seeking advice from someone who was interested in the occult, prosecutors said in court papers.
On Jan. 2, Spann bought a chain, a padlock and an ax at a hardware store, then cut off the girl's head, wrapped the chain about the body, put the girl's remains into a plastic bin and threw it off a bridge somewhere between King County and the Oregon border, prosecutors wrote.
About a month later, Spann, her 14-year-old daughter and an infant son moved to the Sacramento, Calif., area.
Acting on a tip from California Child Protective Services, authorities in Washington began searching for Spann and her daughter in February 2005. She was arrested that June in Sacramento for investigation of child abuse after authorities said she slapped the 14-year-old. Afterward, she talked to authorities about the death of her younger daughter.

this is horrible. She should get life imprisonment without parole. What she did is so shocking. They should take her other children away from her. She deserves to be punished for life. God bless the little girls soul.

That's just horrible, I can't believe people can actually do these things, it just makes me sick to think about it. I think she should get life in prison. If she has mental issues well so be it, obviously she has some kind of problem. It can be dealt with while she's in jail..lol
I wish we had more of the story..like what about the teen and infant. And if her father knew all this was going on about the cult, and calling her the "devil child" why didn't he do something? Sad anyway for the kids and the poor child that was killed. It just sickens me more and more each day...this world and it's fools.

when are they going to learn? If someone has mental problems and they know it, why do they allow these children to stay in these homes? It seems like a relative , a neighbor , someone would call in when they see that something is wrong. These people arent getting treatment for the illness that they have.

Another child falls through the system. The mentally-unstable woman had shown past incidences of instability but only in hindsight were the authorities (or family members) able to "see" what was happening. As for the sentencing though,I believe she should be placed in a mental institution where she can receive the help she needs then serve her time .With time off for good behavior, she could be "normal" and out in 10 years. If she is found to be unable to exist in the real world, then she should remain in hospital.

That is very harsh to kill one's own daughter just due to the spiritual beliefs.I think the whole family of Spann is involved in this murder, because Spann's father should have talked such nonsense to Spann and it took her this far to kill her daughter.I hope the motivator and Spann should endure the punishment.

I am so shocked after I read this article, how terrible they are!In my point of view, those women who have got mental disease should not be allowd to have babies,at least,no right to adopt the babies, the babies should be sent to other guardians to take care of.Therefore the babies can grow up healthily and peacefully, the hospital should give a diagnose on mothers' health situation, and take proper measures to deal with it well,in all,for chidren's sake!

This is so disgusting that I don't even know where to begin. How can this woman consider herself a human say much about being a woman. It amazes me that people like this are able to function normally for any number of years before they commit such a vile act..UGH !
