why is it when someone tells you there are billions of stars in the universe you believe them, but if they tell you there's wet paint someone you just HAVE to touch it?

Well it does seem to be true that people will believe things that have no proof at all and not be sure about things that are obviously true.

For the same reason that people will touch a stove after you say "its hot." They can! Besides there is no way to physically count all the stars.
