I am not trying to offend anyone. Please dont respond with angry comments. I just want to understand why some (i said some...not all) people think that everything good that happenes to them is becuase of Jesus. I want to know why people dont take pride in themselves and say they accomplished something on their own. Please dont reply with pride is a sin because we sin everyday that we are alive and all is forgiven.

I have thought the same thing myself at times, I think its basically a basis for religion and I know, and this is my own opinion-- when I was growing up, thats what I was taught. It was imbedded in me by others before I knew what to think for myself and know how to make my own decisions and understanding. I think this is a great question and is just one of the things about religion that so many people question yet are afraid to say.

I definatly agree. I only ask it because I am searching my religious beliefs right now and some of the things I was raised to believe just seem like brainwashing and control tactics. But then again some of the ideas I was raised with feel right. Its so hard to have an opinion when it comes to religion. It's in my nature to question everything and it really frustrates me when (an example only) a couple conceives a child and they say that the conception only took place because they prayed really hard. I have to bite me tongue everyday so as to not offend people who think like this. Its hard.

Once I wrote a letter on this subject to an Italian newspaper (La Repubblica) and the writer who responds to his readers (Corrado Augias) responded to me telling that I was right. In my letter I told him that I was very angry because Roberto Benigni, an Italian actor, had said that before Jesus, Pagans, when walked in the street, and saw a poor man, they kicked on him. In my letter I wrote that this nonsense is really terrible, before Jesus there were mercy, piety, charity, and so on. Before Jesus there were persons like Socrates, Plato, Aristoteles, Buddha, Confucio, Pitagora, etc, all people very good and with a wonderful moral. So, why to consider "wicked" all the cultures came before Jesus?

I think it's because we are so "fallen" that without God we are really nothing, can do nothing, and that everything we are and accomplish is really through God's gift of grace. This includes our talents.
