Choosing a new puppy

I am going to be looking for a puppy in the near future. I have previously gotten my pets from petshops and breeders, and while I am not advocating these, I just wasn't able to find a puppy through the shelters which i tried first. I was wondering how you go about finding a puppy or young dog from shelters, and which ones you use?

I have gotten all of our dogs from shelters, except 1 (she was a give away from a breeder as she was older) but just wondering, could you adopt a slightly older pup - not necessarily an 8 week old one but maybe something 6 months? None of our dogs have been little pups but something a little older, it has made it easier with not having to handle the puppy stage but at the same time, they're still young enough. Plus, with shelters, the dogs that are usually put down are the older ones & they deserve just as much of a chance as the rest. Just a thought!

Many shelters also have a waiting list. When a dog breed or type that you're looking for comes in, they will give you a call.

I think Humane Societies are great. Ours really evaluates each pet and tells you all the issues they may have. They will make sure the dog is a perfect fit for your family. Kill shelters are a good place to adopt from, just because you know those dogs have mere days to find a home...VS the humane society which keeps dogs until they find a suitable adopter.

First of....I think it's great that you decided to adopt a shelter dog.I never stick to just one....I go to every single one in our area and just keep looking until I find a dog I like. Some shelters get new dogs constantly.....so just because you didn't find one today....you may have better luck next week. You may check and see if they would contact you if they get something that would suit you.One other place to check is Petfinder.com.....they have a lot of listings from private shelters that are otherwise hard to find. I'm always tempted to adopt from a kill shelter....but thank God a lot of citys are getting away from that now. Well good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.
