We got a lot of the boxes for our books by going to the Post Office and asking for their larger sized Priority Mail boxes. They were just the right size to pack full of books, and they didn't end up too heavy that way.

If you go behind grocery stores and such, they have dumpsters just for cardboard. You can find lots of boxes in there. I am in the process of moving also! I never pay for boxes, I think that's just a waste of money. So, look behind those stores, you'll find some...and you'll just have to buy some tape! Good luck!

In the US the UPS stores sell the study professional boxes with handholds and also the large garment boxes with the hanger rod for clothes. But their boxes aren't cheap.
Normal boxes are getting harder to find because most large stores like grocery stores and Walmart's have large presses which smash and bale the boxes for recycling purposes.
For free boxes try asking the people working at the small mom and pop stores. Most likely they still cut and flatten their boxes so that more will fit in the dumpster but they could save them for you if you asked.

I'm lucky...my hubby works for a store that gets boxes all of the time.
