I purchase a back pack for my daughter while we were on vacation, it cost me $20.00 so I thought it would be nice to make one. I went to the fabric store to purchase grommets, and they had 1 size 3/8. It cost $19.99. Anyone have any ideas as to what to use to make the holes, I donot want to spend $20.00. Is this a easy project? I want to make a couple bags this weekend.

My advice on making the holes is taking a hammer and nail, and putting it through your fabric. Depending on the size of grommet, you could use a pretty large nail. I've done this many times with success.
Here is a pattern that I found to make backpacks for my kids. Ihaven't gotten it made, yet, but I thought they were pretty cute...

Thanks for best response! :)
I hope you enjoy your backpacks. Good luck with the nail and hammer.
I would have also suggested using a paper punch (depending on the size of hole you needed) but, it dulls the punch really fast!

backpacks are usually very expensive i remember when i was in high school i was always very rough on my backpacks and my mother would have to buy me a new one at the beginning of every school year i think making your own backpack would be nice but i do not think it would be an easy thing to make at least not for the kind of backpacks that i like to use they are all too complex and extravagent for me to try to make i do not understand what you need holes in the backpack for? but it is pointless to spend twenty dollars on grommets when you could buy a bag already done for the same price

I feel a bit badly now because I cheat, apparently. I don't use grommets. I'm not even certain what you use them for.
I made a backpack that had a drawstring closure. I had the cords go from the top middle to each side, and just had sewn a loop of the cord into the seam of each side of the bottom.
(Trying to figure out how to add a flap.)

I have never made backpacks, but I do have a suggestion. Why not make a small buttonhole? One of my machines has a buttonholer that the template has a small round buttonhole. I believe they call it an eyelet buttonhole. It seems like it should work, but as I said I have never made any backpacks. I do make denim purses from recycled jeans, and I have put buttonholes in them. Good luck!
