dog and cat pet food recall

Dog and Cat - Too Cute
United States
March 17, 2007 5:26am CST
The full list was made avaiblable at 6am CTD. Click on link for details WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths. An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said."At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein. The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said. Menu Foods did not immediately provide a FULL LIST of BRAND NAMES and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (866) 463-6738. The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies, including Procter & Gamble Co. P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the IAMS and EUKANUBA brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said. Menu Foods' three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said. Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness. Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada. Henderson said the recall would cost the company the Canadian equivalent of $26 million to $34 million. Photo: Dog and Cat ___

Wow this sounds really serious, and a bit too much to be just coincidence! If this was happening to people they would sure have sorted it out long before now! Thanks Whiteheather , this does not affect myself but noe that you've raised awareness you might help someone else's pet!

Not true, look at the peanut butter recall. Took them almost a year to figure out what caused it and where. Now they're expanding that recall...

That's how I feel. I shop at both Kroger and Wal-Mart and Iams is one of the higher priced items. I just heard on the news they are also sold at Petsmart. If just one pet is saved by this topic then that is worth posting it.

I often wondered about those recall things. Someone is losing a ton of money. Also, when the lot is recalled, it goes back to the manufacturer. There might only be a small problem with a small amount, yet tens of thousands of a given product is returned. Makes you wonder if it is just recycled, canned all over again and shipped with a label with a different lot number?

I hadn't heard about this recall until after i lost one of my kitties, and another was quite ill, i was frantic, the vet never told me ANYTHING, and a friend had to tell me right here on MyLot... It really worries me what'll happen next, and i have thought about the recycling thing, makes me think quite strongly about putting them on a raw diet, fresh, safe, and in the long run, a lot healthier to them.

Wow that is so sad. I can't believe all the different brands listed, and all those stores listed. A lot of those stores are across the nation, not just in a specific area. What's going on at these food/processing plants? Peanut butter, spinach, pet food, is there anything safe anymore?

Isn't that shocking... It was the first bit of news I got today. I'm glad I do a search before starting a discussion because I was all set to post this same thing...lol I thanked my lucky stars my dogs and cats won't eat that type of food. I do feeed them Old Roy Gourmet canned food once a day. I think I am going to hold of and possibly stop feeding it to them. How in the world are we supposed to know what is safe anymore..I'm tearing my hair out over this pet food stuff. I'm almost at the point of thinking I have to make my own pet foods just to be safe...it's crazy and shouldn't be this way. I think pet foods should be paid more attention to regarding safety and quality.

The vets sell Iams in Australia. It is supposed to be the top quality, best food around for cats & dogs. You mentioned wheat gluten possibly being involved. Our vet states that dogs should not be fed bread products, as it can cause serious side effects. Wheat gluten is high in bread. It makes me wonder??

i'd heard about this-i had bought the "companion" brand for my pets before-some of them seemed to like it. but it always made my girl cat throw up,so i bought them friskies instead.i suspected the dye they use to color it in her case,but.. i'm gonna stick to friskies from here on in.

Thank you so much for the information. I did find a brand on the list that I used to use, luckily I quit using it a long time ago. Again, thank you for being so concerned about the lives of our babies.

It is pretty sad when pet food becomes deadly. Sometimes you wonder if it isn't best to just make ALL the food you are going to give to those you care about, from scratch so you know exactly what is in it. I am sure that anything a loving pet owner could fix on their own would be an improvement over what a huge company might concoct. Caring hands are always better.

Thank you very much. I had heard about the pets dying and think it is awful. I was afaid to even feed my pets a new bag of food before, but now can rest as i do not have any of the recalled lots. My dog will only eat 3 kinds of food.2 are canned and one is on the list but another lot, but I have 1 can of it and will through it out to be safe. I was a victim of the peanut butter contamination and although I was VERY sick I lived and hate that so many were affected by it before anything was done. I do understand it takes time to figure out what causes these things , but expect some notice if thousands of people are getting sick. I am glad they did not wait 9 or so months before recalling these products.
