Writing or journaling prompts

When I was in school I used a book called Metro for writing prompts. Now I really don't want to spend $60 for writing prompts, so I'm wondering if anyone has websites they recommend for writing or journaling prompts.

I also wanted to add that I have an article on Writer's Block with an idea to help combat it, published on Associated Content. You can also make extra money for writing short article for them...they pay $5-$20+ for articles of around 500 words. It's a great site and I have been paid many times. http://www.associatedcontent.com/join.html?refer=15512 I hope to see you there. If I can help you in any way, please let me know.

Your geocities link didn't work for me. : ( I've always wondered about AC, but haven't looked too deeply into it. It certainly would be nice to submit to it, but I'll have to work on those writing prompts first : ) Thank you for the links, I'm checking them out.

One of the good things about Associated Content is that once you sign up, they have a weekly (or biweekly?) email that they send, requesting topics they want to publish, so that would offer some ideas for you of what to write about. Also they have a daily "best article" email. Often I find that reading the article of the day gives me new ideas. Finally, I have a small book that someone gave me called "Writer's Block," literally in the shape of a block that has a lot of good writing prompts. It's small so it can't cost much.

A very good book is "A Writer's Book of Days" by Judy Reeves. It has prompts for every day of the year, and then some additional ones at the end of the message for the month. Two other websites are www.inspiredtojournal.com and www.creativewritingprompts.com. You can also find prompts by looking at book titles or song lyrics or poetry. I am a member of a writing group and each time we meet we have a different leader who has made prompts for the day. Sometimes they follow a theme. Last week it was "under" - under my skin, under the earth, under the bed, etc. Prompts can be found everywhere. You just have to keep your eyes open. Pictures are good prompts too.

Julia Cameron suggests writing morning pages. Three pages every morning. Just write. Go where ever the pen takes you. This will help you.

I've been so out of the practice of writing (It's been over a year and a half) that I've stopped being able to put inspiration to pen and paper. I've been reading a lot of things lately that make me want to write in response, but the words don't flow. My writing muscles have atrophied, and my adviser would be so ashamed of me!

Mornings and I don't get along. I get up only early enough to eat and get ready for work, and I refuse to get up any earlier! Even for the sake of writing. I've also always felt way too much pressure with the "just write" business. It's just like whenever anyone says "tell me a story" or "sing me a song" or "ask me a question" I go completely blank. I need a topic, or I am completely lost.

I came back to this discussion because I think it's an interesting topic and I wanted to see if anyone had added anything. I saw an interesting quote yesterday on Gather.com in one of the writing groups to the effect of "write the book you want to read." Maybe what you should do is try to create your own writing prompts blog or book. Obviously other people out there need help with this too! Anyway, thanks to all those who posted stuff. I liked the creative-portal website and the one affiliated with Writer's Digest. Good stuff.

That's a pretty good idea! I'll definitely try that!
