Sewing a dress with a pattern takes time. Sometimes I just follow the cut of an old dress. Yes it is a lazy way to sew a dress. It is not base on a new style.

i agree with you sewing a dress with a pattern takes alot of time especially if it is a really difficult pattern to do i barely have time to sew in the first place between working two jobs and looking to take on a third night shift job and taking care of a small farm so it takes me even longer to finish a sewing pattern i think following the cut of an old dress is the easiest way especially if i like the way that particular dress fitted on me i am not a professional sewer so sometimes i have to take the easy "lazy" way

This is definately not the lazy way out. I have done that in the past, but I have better luck with patterns. It's a try by error way in my opinion. I usually buy patterns when they run sales, sometimes they are .99 or 1.99. That is when I stock up. At least you still sew. So few people still sew, because the cost of fabric and patterns has gone up so much, sometimes it's hard to see the worth of it. I love the creativity of sewing.

I think it is great. I took one very comfy old dress apart and fused interfacing to all the pieces. This is now my favorite pattern to use I KNOW what I am going to end up with. I have also fused interfacing to paper pattern pieces. Keeps them in much better shape. At the price of new patterns this makes very good sense to me. If I were making things for a growing child I don't think the added expense of the facings fabric would be worth it though.
