I love Lily Allen..and I'm in the US. However, when I was looking her up on the internet I saw a bunch of UK people calling her white trash!! Why? I mean what has she done to be called that? I found it really disconcerning because she is one of the few pop stars that I enjoy.

Jealousy. That would be my guess. I know other Brit acts, like Lady Sovereign have issues with her, mostly out of jealousy. Her dad is an actor and mom a film producer, so she had privilages growing up. She was just a rebellious, partying, teenager. Maybe that just doesn't play as well across the pond as it does here in the states.

I think it is because she is quite associated with chav culture, which is like the British equivalent of white trash. Chavs wear lots of fake gold jewellery, like Lily Allen. They also like to go out a lot, drink too much, get into fights and throw up in the gutter. That's the kind of scene which her songs are often about. The ironic thing is that she is not really a chav at all but a middle-class girl who just likes to sing about roughing it.

after seeing her video I have to agree she is a real loser. Look at all that was advocated in that video with the harm she instigated.

I think they are talking about the video for 'Smile', where Lily hires people to harrass her boyfriend that cheated on her, then smiles about it. The problem with complaining about a music video is that it is a work of fiction. The song connects with people, especially women, because everybody feels like that, but would never do it.

White trash isn't really a commonly used phrase in the UK so not sure where you saw that about Lily Allen. I haven't actually seen any of her music videos but Smile was my favourite single released last year and has been my phone ring tone for 7 or 8 months now. I know Lily Allen has put a few noses out of joint by being quite blunt about what she thinks of other artists but I find it rather amusing - she is a talented young woman and I think she'll go far, if only people would give her a break. She hasn't had the easiest of lives compared to some pop stars so people should just accept her for what she is, a good singer with a rather unique style :)

My guess is that she came across as a normal human being, rather than a rarified pop star. Her songs are about the things we all know (unless you are famous)--people trying to get your number, siblings smoking pot, aunty window shopping. I like her music; of course, I spent a couple of years in a trailer park, so go figure.

no it's not jealousy she acts trashy - always seeking gutter-press publicity - mouthing off about different celebrities to provoke controversy, getting completely smashed and falling all over the place, acting a lot more famous than she is she was also very fake about her upbringing, talking with an insulting 'fake-common' accent, telling people she was just an ordinary kid with a normal upbringing in her bedroom recording songs which happened to go popular on youtube - whereas really she's a rich kid who went to expensive schools, has famous parents with a lot of contacts, had trendy sound engineers mixing and backing her 'homemade myspace uploads' and a dad with huge connections in the music world she behaves like someone who thinks she is far more important than she actually is, often drunk, whorring fame, slurring and swearing at people with the uninteresting things she has to say then she'd be endlessly picking fights with much bigger stars saying outrageous things about them to get her face in the papers, all the time, then crying when those stars replied and rightly told her to shut up. youtube 'lily allen elton john gq' for example
