My daughter was just diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and we were told the only way to treat this is to treat the symptoms and the only way to fix this is to have a surgery. Does anyone know more about this? The doctor just put her on a antidepressant to help with her headaches. Is this also heard of?

yes it is, My sons doctor said there was no meds that would help with the headaches besides narcotics and he would not put my son on anything, we are scheduled for sugery on the 3rd of april, they said that is the only way to relieve the headaches, to get rid of the pressure on the brain, how old is your daughter? If she is very little i would not give her any antidepresents, and i would be looking for a different doctor.

I have Chiari Malformation type 2. Narcotics are not the answer! Ask about Topamax. I have heard very good things about it. I am on Amitriptyline to kinda help level out the pressure in my head, but technically that is an anti depressant. I have been on it since I was 15 and I am still on it. It works great for me. I had the decompression in 2004. I still have daily headaches. The decompression is NOT a cure but can greatly reduce symptoms. Also, It took be about 3 months to be able to get full range of motion of my neck (with rigorous PT.)
