Are you giving your response because:
1. you would like to earn points?
2. you would like to raise your friend's rate?
3. you would like give your honest opinion about it?
4. you would like to get ideas from the discussion?
5. you would like to contribute your knowledge and information?

I'm serious when giving response to a discussion, because i would like to know if my responses are useful and would like to contribute my knowledge and information to others.
I give honest opinion on discussions, but there's always someone out there who gives good opinion and those opinions changes the way i think.

your purpose of responding to know how useful your views and opinions are somewhat sn evaluation of your own reply. And then you tend to learn from others whom you think has good answers than you. You are a flexible one. Thank you for responding. Your's I chose is the best response. Please include me in your list of friends. Have a nice day!

All of the above, if I had to choose one answer.
I'm a writer by nature, so I tend to put more than just a word ot two into my responses. Don't get me wrong, some are way shorter than others, but then there is only so much you can say about certain topics. I ove to write and love to give my opinion. If there was an actual legitmit way to it for a living, I would be doing it.
Of course, #'s 1-4 are cool benefits, also.

That's wonderful! Did you have some writings in newspapers, magazines and other kinds of publications? Would you like to share your experiences in writing here at myLot? I'd love to hear that! By the way, can I include you in my list of friends?

Of course you can include me as a friend.
I haven't been published yet, and am trying to find a way to make some money at writing. Actual work is just not my thing. I need more freedom, I need to spread my wings, as the saying goes. But yes, I will share writing, opinions, and anything else that people will actually read. If you really wanna see what my writing is like, check out my MySpace blog: http://blog.myspce/tweakpotter
It's only got a couple entries because MySpace cancelled my other account, but it will be growing. Trust me!

It's 3,4 and 5 for me. I respond to a discussion if i find it interesting and if i can relate to it. That's the important thing really. . I like to suck ideas to matters i'm not familiar with and share my views and thoughts on something i'm familiar and on a situation with. (",)

I have to admit. I respond to discussions to earn points. But I'm not very interested in raising my friend's rate. In fact, I don't have a lot of friends.

Earning money was what dragged me here the first time, but eventually, I learned to enjoy my experiences here. Money may not be much but you get to use your head and gaining friends as well. I've been here for a month now and was able to figure out my way here. The few close friends I have here helps me to inspire more. In every thread, I always make sure to give my sensible responses. I detested one or two words in my own posts. Good luck and happy posting.

I have to admit, I respond to discussions to gain points. But I also enjoy what I'm doing and I'm sure you are too.
I'm not very interested in raising my friend's rate. In fact, I have ver few friends. I figure that if I give quality discussions people will give me a + rate. I know I do give + rates even to people who are not in my friends list.
Sometimes, discussions give me an idea for another discussion. I also want to see other people's responses to discussions I can relate to.
I give my honestEST opinion and contribute my knowledge. That's why I choose to respond only to discussions that are of interest to me.

all of the above as you have written but in no particular order. lots of factors affects the current behavior of responding, but basically motivated by earning points as its is also somehow the very basis of the existence of mylot, but totally more complicated how this this is sustained.
you may also add that one may just want to improve his/her literary skills. as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
