Do you eat before going to the grocery store?

I know that there have been many discussions about grocery shopping, but I haven't seen one like this.
I noticed that I stick to my list and spend far less at the grocery store when I go on a full stomach. I don't buy a lot of junk type purchases when I'm full. I have noticed a major difference when going when I'm hungry, I tend to through anything that looks good into my basket. :)
So I was just wondering do you make it a point to eat first prior to going to the grocery store? Does it even matter whether your hungry or not? Do you do anything else prior to going to the grocery store that others may find different?

Yes we always eat before we get groceries. My husband especially has to eat if he goes with me because he will buy anything and everything...lol
I don't have to eat to stick to my budget but it is more of a habit to eat out before groceries. Just something we look forward to doing.

Years ago when I left home my mom and I would shop together and we always went out to eat first and then we went shopping it became a routine for us and I continue to do this to this day. :)

I SHOULD eat before we go but I usually dont so I end up sometimes binge shopping or impulse buying, however you wanna word it LOL.....I need to start making a point of doing it though AND actually only getting what we need rather than for example, buying 3 boxes of pasta when we already have pasta in the pantry ya know...I'm the worst for that...I think because I'm worried we'll run out or something LOL

I do that with toilet paper, every time I go to Wal-Mart I buy more. Even though I know that we have plenty already. LOL

Not usually, but if I'm really hungry I'll grab a snack before I shop. I've noticed the same problem -- if I go grocery shopping while I'm hungry I spend twice as much and I can't make it through the bakery department without grabbing something!

LOL, the bakery department is the worst especially when they are actually baking things and you can smell throughout the store. Or the stores that bake pizzas and you can buy by the slice or a whole pizza, I think that stores do this on purpose to get us to buy even more. :)

I try to eat a small snack at the very least before I go in the grocery store. Otherwise just the mere site of food makes me hungry and wanting to buy anything and everything in site. If I am hungry and know I need to go grocery shopping I stop and get a sandwich. Far better to spend a few bucks on a sandwich that to go to the grocery store and spend 40 bucks more than I budgeted.

LOL, I completely agree. I tend to spend far more and buy lots more junk food when I'm hungry. :)

If I go to the store on an empty stomach, I am doomed. I tend to buy things that aren't on my list. Of course that would be if I remember to bring my list with me. I am famous for making great lists and leaving them on the kitchen counter!
I also make sure that I visit the porcelain Goddess before I leave the house. How I hate to get a call from Mother Nature in the middle of the store with a cart full of groceries!

No way. I go on weekends when they have all the displays set up giving free samples. I get an almost full lunch doing that. My daughter loves going also. Of course I do a lot of impulse buying when I'm hungry. Then I always forget the list at home. Maybe move the grocery store inside my garage? Hahahaha!

I hate when I forget my list at home and my kids love going to the grocery store when they have the displays out to try things. I'm not a picker and tend to not try things in the store. I do like junk food and when hungry tend to buy way more than usual when on an empty stomach. :)

Good question! I've never thought about this before! I usually do just fine whether I have just eaten or not. The problem comes when my husband goes with me just after he gets off work and it really hungry. Guess I should avoid taking him with me!

They always say that you should never go grocery shopping when you're hungry because you will tend to buy things that you normally wouldn't. I don't notice any difference whether I go when I've eaten or not, to be honest. I have to fight with myself not to buy junk food or convenience foods that are no good for me no matter what. I usually shop on my way home from work. I have a list made out from the sale flyer, and I'll have my coupons all ready to go. I just stick with the list and try to avoid buying on impulse. It's never easy to eat right, but I do my best to stick with the list.

I don't eat a full course meal before deciding to go grocery shopping. But sometimes I will have a small snack to tie me over until I am finished grocery shopping. There have been times though where I have gone grocery shopping with an empty stomach. And I was perfectly fine grocery shopping. I didn't find I was going out of my way to purchase a bunch of junk. If anything I feel I was still okay grocery shopping as I tend to be more of a smart shopper in general in the first place.
There have been times though where I had eaten all to much the day before & then the day I had to go grocery shopping. And I didn't actually start buying everything in sight. But I felt after I was finished grocery shopping that I was feeling so ill because I didn't put anything in to my body before deciding to leave the house.
I've learned that it is best sometimes to have a small snack to tie you over if you don't have time to make yourself some lunch or breakfast though.. As I know I am fine going grocery shopping on an empty stomach. But if anything I have a snack just to make myself feel a little more energized. I think it's good to have something to eat prior to just so you have energy within you so you can go do your grocery shopping. I find I tend to wait until after grocery shopping to put some real food in my body. As I find that is one I am the most hungry.. Is usually after I finish grocery shopping for some reason.
I find when my other half goes & does grocery shopping for us.. That he is the one who needs something more than a snack to go grocery shopping. As I find sometimes if he doesn't he will come back from grocery shopping feeling rather crummy. So I usually will make him a sandwich before hand so he has something to snack on.. On the way to the grocery store. I know when my other half & me had first gotten together.. He wasn't a smart shopper like me.. So if he went on an empty stomach most likely he would indeed go out & buy anything that was in his sight..
Now I find that he is a smart shopper like me in a lot of ways.. I find he tends to watch his prices, & tries to go with the best deal.. I like that he helps me out with grocery shopping as well as it tends to give me a break..
I find though I tend to stick to my budget at all times.. There have been very few times where I have actually gone over my budget quite honestly.. I find my other half tends to go over our budget more than I do sometimes.. I find it doesn't matter if I am going grocery shopping on an empty stomach.. Or if I am going grocery shopping on a full stomach.. I tend to resist the urge to just purchase anything in sight.. Especially items that may look all to irresistible.. I mean I am only human.. I do crave certain foods sometimes.. But I find I will purchase these items if I have left over money to spend afterwards..
In conclusion.. I do think it is important to eat before grocery shopping.. As it helps to keep your strength & energy level up more than anything.. I don't eat though just so I will resist the urge to buy everything in sight.. I find I tend to eat because I want to feel energized before deciding to go out & do my shopping.. As I find it helps me to really stay concentrated on my budget & what I am looking for in general when going grocery shopping..
I know that I personally dislike feeling yucky after I am finished shopping.. So I try to put some type of food in my stomach before going & running my errands which include grocery shopping.. I find I am tired after grocery shopping as it is half of the time.. So I rather still feel energized some-what after my shopping experience is all done & over with! . .
Thanks for allowing me to share! xx

That is a very good question! I had never thought about it before but I often end up hungry half way round and then start grabbing things for me and the kids to nibble whilst waiting for the cab outside!
Perhaps I should make sure we eat before going and I might save myself a few pennies!
Thank sfor that one!

I usually have lunch before I go grocery shopping. Not really with the intention of being full while I'm shopping, it's just a part of my routine.
I do know that this whole theory has been scientifically tested, and the results are what you describe.

Yeah I've noticed that too that I tend to buy more if I go grocery shopping hungry. However if I go on a full stomach I tend not to buy much and then I get home and realize I wasted a trip because I hardly bought anything and my refrigerater is still empty. I don't tend to make a list either. I just go down the lanes and grab. The only things that I usually will write down is if I have to buy something that is out of the ordinary that day.

I don't always but I really need to! I find myself buying all kinds of junk I wouldn't normally buy if I had eaten before I went. If I eat before I go I tend to think with my head and not my stomach.
However, I don't like to go after I've had a big dinner, either, because then I am to tired to want to deal with it. I'm ready to sit and relax not wander around the store and then have to carry it all in and put it away. I end up rushing thru the store and forgetting things. If I eat a sandwich or something light, just enough that I'm not hungry, that is when I am able to think clearly and not rush thru the store.
I try to make a list but I always find things that I forgot to add or that are on sale. I try to plan most dinners in advance and see what I need before I go, but it doesn't always happen or I find things that I didn't think of that sound good.

I try to eat before I got to the store. Otherwise, like you, I will put everything that looks good in my cart! But I do make sure I have a list with me. If I dont have my list...then forget it. I have spent way too much and actually not even bought anything that I need!
