Books for Children

March 20, 2007 5:31am CST
I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old. What sort of books would you recommend for them to read. The little one likes to try to read books herself so ones with only one or two words reapeated through the book are idea. She loves 'hug' by Jez Ahlborough but I don't know of any similar books. My older daughter needs books that she can read herself that have a certain amount of repitition but aren't too boring.

Robert Munsch! My kids LOVE Robert Munsch books..Love you Forever is a family favourite and the first book my oldest got from my sister as a newborn..I used to read it to him every night before putting him in his crib, then as he got older we would read it together then he eventually read it on his own quite often...I did the same thing with my daughter and we had JUST bought my youngest his copy before he passed away..I never had a chance to read it to him so we buried him with it....

My little boy is two and loves his books - I often take him to the library but he has great collection of his own. He loves nursery rhymes that he can learn and repeat and counting books are also good fun. His favourites are his bear books - little stories about a little bear and a big bear and with these I make up other stories to tell him too. I'm not sure about the books for 5 year olds..not quite there yet?

Reading to kids is a great thing to do. It helps stretch their imagination. Goodnight moon is a good book for kids that age. The Big Max detective series is good also. It's on the smaller child's level, but starts them on the road to thinking about what might have happened.

We have goodnight moon. My 5 year old reads it to her sister they both love it. I would recommend that book to anyone.

Very Hungry Caterpillar - The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a colorful counting book!
For two year olds, board books are very durable, and I know the Eric Carle books come in that form. I like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, much better than Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Beautiful traditional nursery rhyme books are great, because the kids will memorize the words, and associate them with the great illustrations, and will consider themselves to be readers, then. Books that can also be sung, such as Little Drummer Boy (Ezra Jack Keats) and Over in the Meadow, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, all make the child feel like a reader.

Your children are very young and it's very good time to start inculcating in them the love of God. I am a Christian, a child of God, baptized into Christ on October 1, 1989 and I belong to the Church of Christ founded and headed by Christ as shown in Acts Chapter 2. I am given the gift of knowledge and understanding Bible Greek and I translate the Word of God from Greek to English PLAINLY - Greek word into its English equivalent with additional words for grammar purposes written in italics so that readers may delete them when they so desire. I have already published GENESIS, EXODUS, LEVITICUS (Greek-English), THE WILL New Testament (Greek to English), ELEMENTS of SALVATION, The Right Way, GOD, ORIGIN, TRANSFER into PERFECTION, GREEK-ENGLISH (Grammar & Vocabulary), WORDS in THE WILL New Testament, and others shown at http://www.lulu.com/arseniajoaquin I have seen the versions being circulated worldwide and they are generally admitted to be 80% NOT translations. My translations are 99.99% translations and I see the truth, beauty, and sweetness of the Word of God. I hope these books could also help people understand the Word of God and be saved. I recommend GENESIS, EXODUS, LEVITICUS (Greek-English) as these first 3 books of the Holy Bible is the source of wisdom and in fact our basic knowledge of everything in our life originated from them.

I am not a religious person. However I am already teaching them morals such as why we are vegan, and how to be kind to other people.

Well... I can't if a 2 year old can read a book. I would prefer some colourful picture books for the younger one... Children likes colourful books... For your 5 year old, I would recommend some abridged forms of classics like Hiedi, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of OZ etc. Classic books are really good and will make a very good impression in your child's mind. You can get abridged forms of these books from any children shop. I liked those books during my childhood... Give it to her and I hope she likes that too.

I was also going to recommend Goodnight Moon - my son loved that book when he was little. He also loved Dr. Seuss books. Also, there were two other books that come to mind (it's been a long time since my son was as young as your kids so bear with me). They were titled: "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" & "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" - he really liked those as well. I'm not sure who writes the Monster in the Closet books but my son really liked those and I remember them being really popular when I was little too. Real simple. My nephew is 5 and likes them as well. The Hungry Caterpillar is another good one. The bookstores here all have children friendly sections and when I go in to buy books for my little niece and nephews, there are always kids in that section reading books or with parents reading them books. I think it's a great idea and it gives the kids a chance to explore and the parents a chance to see what draws their children's attention. Another idea (if someone hasn't mentioned it already) is to go to Amazon.com and narrow down your search by age and product. So select 2 years old and books - it should pop up with a bunch of ideas/choices for you to get an idea on titles. Good luck, I think reading to your children is a wonderful thing!

I think Seuss is great, as well. Try some like 'Hop on Pop' that have lots of similar words that rhyme. Or 'One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish'. I used to read these when I was a child, and I read them to the kid's I used to nanny. I know Seuss gets increasingly difficult, but there are some that should be appropriate for your daughter. As far as the two year old, I am sorry, but I'm not familiar with any new books or authors for her age group... give me a couple years and I'm sure I'll be knee deep in them, though!

Well, there is a book called The Little Prince that i recommend you read to them. i know you wanted books for them to read, but this book is too amazing to pass up and it is probably a bit too advanced for your girls to read on their own right now. It is a lovely book, though. Also, read The Giving Tree. That is another amazing book. Your 5 year old could probably read The Hungry Little Caterpillar on her own or If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.

Our children are of the same age. I provide my 2 year old with books that have lots of colorful drawings. My 5 year old wants books that have illustrations but with more letters. I sent my daughter in montessori basic education wherein the system of education is paterned according to the child's needs. They have time to play, learn, interact, learn values & are taught to take care of themselves at an early age.

One of my favorite all time children's books, which would be perfect for your 5 year old is "The Country Bunny & the Little Gold Shoes. It's an Easter book and one that would most likely be too hard for her to read herself, but a book that you could read to her. It's delightful and ahead of it's time. It always makes me cry. What a sweet book. I HIGHLY recommend it!

In regards to books for children to read I believe that the best books for children to read are the old golden books, black beauty would be a lovely book for your 5 year old to have a look at, so try to find this where you live or something similar.

I would recommend books with lot of pictures of animals and people in them and less text. For your 5 year old child try if you can get your hands on Panchatantra or Jataka Tales. These are stories involving animals and humans which are very simple and have good morals in them. You can read them aloud to your children and they can also enact some of these as plays in their schools. Cheers! Ram

Sandra Boynton is the absolute best. "But Not the Hippopotomus" and "Hippo's Go Beserk" are my favorites, but so are all of them. They are great board books, so even your 2 year old can turn the pages. They're easy enough to make good first readers for your 5 year old. The stories are ones that you can actually enjoy as well. They rhyme well and in a few readings you'll have them memorized. I found them when my first child was 1 years old and have bought them for many people as baby shower gifts.

from what i have heard children of 3 or less who has interest in books must be given such books where there are lots of picture amd alphabets which are larger. it would be good if the alphabets are related to pic. then there will be a map in there ming linking alphabets to picture, which help them to remember . So happy reading to your cute little angles.
