I just can't sleep. I have been taking tylenol pm, but now it seems to not work anymore. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get more sleep? I need rest! I have a 13 month old son, and my husband had gone back to work. Now I NEED to get some sleep, and I am desperate! I need some help, and any advice is welcome.

I find that listening to "mood music" helps me sleep. Make sure it doesnt have any words in it or you'll be tempted to stay awake to listen to the words. Plus, only get one cd and listen to it every night, while going to bed at the same time and your body will find itself moving towards a pattern. Don't drink anything with caffeine or sugar at least three hours before you try to sleep and stay away from eating big meals (light snacks are ok) right before or your body is going to be confused about whether it supposed to be sleeping or digesting. Also...try excercising a little bit during the day so your body gets tired. I don't think you should take sleeping pills though because they can be very dangerous and you want to be in a sleep state which allows you to awaken if your son does. Sleeping pills are going to leave you drowsy if you don't get a full eight hours of sleep and I somehow dont see that happening with a young child.

Do you drink tea and coffee at all? Being addicted to caffine can keep you awake as the stimulents are in your system for a long time after you have had the drink.
Have you tried having a snack before bed, sometimes a small meal can help you sleep.
You might like to try some relaxation teachniques to help you drop off, how about some meditation?

I actually try to avoid caffeine because I have an undiagnosed heart problem, and it makes my heart rate go through the roof. Good idea on the meditation, I will have to try it. Any sites or books you can recommend?

Relaxation therapy can relax your body and mind and stressed out muscles. Breathing exercises, massage therapy or some forms of yoga can also help to relieve stress and tension. Sleep therapy involves allowing a few hours of sleep during the night and gradually increasing the time until you reach a normal night's sleep. Here are some herbal tips :-
Valerian: This herbal tranquilizer may help muscles relax.
Melatonin: The pineal gland produces this hormone. Small amounts can help regulate the sleep cycle in people who have a deficiency or in people with jet lag.
Chamomile: This soothing and calming tea is used to invite rest.
Kava Kava: A Pacific island root that may help alleviate anxiety, and set the stage for restful sleep.

When I can't sleep, I use a holisitic/herbal sleeping pill called Quietude. The reason I use this brand is because it is one of the few things that I don't have to worry about interacting with my medication. I have used it both when I was on birth control and bloodpressure meds. In fact, the nutritist at the store reccomended this one when I told her that I was worried about having a bad reaction with my other meds.
Another thing you could look into is self hypnosis. I know this sounds a little crazy, but I have a friend who has having trouble sleeping more than 2 hours each night. No meds seemed to work for him, so he learned some relaxing and self hypnosis techniques so he could literally teach himself how to fall asleep. Now he can fall asleep within 5 mins everynight. He is also sleeping an average of 6 hours.
I hope you find something that works for you.
