Has your child ever been hospitalized?

I'm sure that a lot of kids have been. I've been really lucky considering I have three kids of my own. My pregnancies were relatively problem-free and we have not had any emergencies or broken bones (knock on wood). My oldest daughter was hospitalized when she was only 10 weeks old with Salmonela Poisoning. My mother-in-law was taking care of her while I worked and she noticed that my daughter was bleeding rectally, not a lot but enough to notice. So I left work and took her to the doctor and they sent her to the hospital to be tested and they found out that is what she had. She contracted it because my husband had a pet iguana and didn't wash his hands good enough or something. My daughter had to stay in the hospital for seven days on an IV and then had to have home nurse care for another seven days after she was released. The doctor told me that she was lucky we brought her in when we did or she could have died if we had let it go. Scary thought! Tell me about your stories...

So far my daughter has only been hospitalized once *knock on wood*. We had to admit her when she was 5 days old with severe jaundice. When we admitted her we found out she not only had jaundice but was dehydrated b/c she hadn't been latching on properly. I felt like the worst mother in the world! We had to be in the hospital for 3 days and the lactation consultants taught me what I was doing wrong. She's perfect and healthy now. : )

The least I would want to happen is have my kids in the hospital. Nevertheless, I have my daughter hospitalized when she was turning 3. We even celebrated her 3rd birthday in the hospital. She had a diarrhea with vomiting. The doctor said that she might have eaten something that is not well cooked and has bacterias. I remember her feeding noodles which we bought cooked from a nearby market. I've learned my lesson and I never let her eat anything from the market without me cooking it again.

I've had food poisoning before and it is not fun! Yes, you have to be careful with foods not prepared by you, we have had some restaurants here in the USA that have had some bad food.

Four kids and I am happy to say no hospital stays. My oldest is only 6 1/2, though. Our biggest scare was with our son. He was about 2 1/2 and I accidentally dislocated his elbow--twice! I found out later that it is common in kids and now we are careful how we grab the kids arms (always above the elbow) because accidentally dislocating an elbow is much much easier then having to purposefully pop it back into place (which I had to do the second time).

Yikes! I had an aunt who used to pick up her kids that way and even though I was a child myself I would wince, waiting for just such a thing to happen! I won't swing my kids by the arms when we play because I am afraid of that happening.

My son was born with a cleft palate so everything he ate went out his nose instead of in his stomach. Well one day (he was about three weeks old) i gave him some liquid vitamins and he choked and stopped breathing! He was blue and i freaked. I did rescue breathing until the ambulance could get there. He stayed in the hospital over night but his o2 sats kept going down to 50% so they sent him by ambulance two hours away to another hospital where they inserted an NG tube. He had a feeding tube till he was 16 months old. He's a great eater now and since then he has had the surgery to repair his cleft palate!

My son was just recently hospitalized due to pneumonia... we decided to confine him to the hospital when after a week he didn't get well from hard coughing! My only concern was he's afraid of doctors and injections. He was realy freaking out. He stayed there for five days...

That can be real scary for a child, I am glad he is better. It's a good thing you took him in when you did!

Yes, my daughter had to be put in the hospital when she was 2. She was spending the night with my sister and they let her play outside by herself that afternoon and she feel off the porch onto a board that had a rusty nail sticking through it. The nail went right through her kneecap. When I found out THE NEXT DAY I asked my sister if she had taken her to the doctor, she had not. My babies leg was turning purple from the knee down. I took her to our local E.R. they said she was fine. I knew they were wrong because she wouldn't stay awake. I drove two hours to get her to Arkansas Children's Hospital and as soon as they saw her knee they rushed her in to the O.R. I was tols after the surgery that they had to put pins in her knee and that if I had listened to our local E.R. she might have lost her leg. She stayed two weeks in ACH and I thank God that they didn't give us the run around. My child is 14 now and she doesn't have any problems with her knee. ACH is the best in Arkansas for sick children.

OMG I can't believe your sister didn't call you! I can't stand it when doctors try to tell you that the kid is fine when you know darn well that they aren't. You daughter is so blessed that you listened to your instict and took her elsewhere for treatment.

Two of my three children have been in hospital. My eldest (she's 12 now) was the smallest born(5lb) and has never really been sick - except a couple of broken bones. My middle (9) has had sever tonsillitis and been in hospital for a few days having IV antibiotics and my youngest(5) has been in hospital about 5 times for febril convulsions, ear infections, tonsillitis and having his tonsils removed. Touch wood we haven't had any recent admissions.

Wow, your children really keep you on your toes! My middle child had a couple of ear infections but nothing serious enought to go to the hospital. I will knock on wood here, too, that you won't be at the hospital anytime soon!

Unfortunately, yes, many times... Youngest has asthma and was hospitalized the first time at 18 months old. She's been in at least 7 times since then, the latest when she was in 5th grade. She's 13 now and has had to make ER trips, but hasn't had to be admitted. Oldest, who is 16 now, had sinus surgery, then was admitted for migraines once, then had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. We've been to the ER with her more times than I can count with one health problem after another.

Yes, 4 out of 4 have all been in the hospital at one time or another. I've come close to losing 2 of them. My oldest 2 are grown and gone (moved out). I came close to losing the oldest a couple of times. That doesn't count the ER visits for stitches, broken bones, concussions, etc.

Wow! All boys? With all of those stitches, broken bones and concussions I would assume they are boys or really active girls!

I’m quite lucky because I have a one year old daughter and she never been hospitalized (cross my fingers). The worse thing she contracted was cough & colds. So we are really thankful because God has given us a very healthy baby.

My youngest daughter was admitted three years ago because of food poisoning. My sister fed my daughter some leftover food without reheating it first. After an hour, my daughter began vomiting and her pallor had turned grayish white. I was so alarmed that I rushed her right away to the hospital. She stayed there for a night. I was only too grateful that the doctor was able to pump out all the poison out her body. It was a hard lesson that I learned. That's why I posted a thread earlier about leftover food. :0

That is very scary, I don't keep leftovers for more than a day, two at the most. My mother-in-law thinks I am wasteful but I say, you can't be too careful!

My 2nd DD was hospitalized for 3 days when she was 5 weeks old. She had a fever, diarrhea, and poor weight gain. Except for the fever she'd been like that since birth but I couldn't get anyone to listen to me. It turned out she had a milk allergy. When she was just a few months shy of 3, on April Fool's Day of all days, she broke her arm. She was at her aunt's while I had my first day out after having her little brother. Apparently, she tripped and fell on their hardwood floor about an hour before we got home. Her aunt said she cried a little but then fell fast asleep so she thought my daughter was fine. We got there just as she was waking up and she was sobbing so bad. All we could understand was "Owwie arm" so off we went to the emergency room. It took a while to convince them that something was seriously wrong with her arm (she wasn't moving it at all) but eventually they did the x-rays and got it all fixed up. The cast ended up coming off 5 weeks later, in part because it was about the right time and in part because her arm had lost so much muscle tone her cast could slide right off...that's why we took her back at 5 weeks instead of waiting the full 6. She started messing with the cast because it was bugging her and managed to pull it up over her hand. My youngest son was hospitalized for 1 day when he was a month old. His only symptom was a fever. After 24 hours his fever was down and they said all his tests came back clear so we were sent home. This was on a Friday. The following Monday, the head radiologist called our doctor and said (this is exactly what our doctor told me) "Umm, we got a little behind last week and just got around to looking at (my son's) chest x-ray's. It appears he has pneumonia." So my doctor started in on him about how she'd sent the baby home because they'd said he was fine. The radiologist actually tried to blame our doctor saying it was her decision to send him home not there's. But she sent him home based on false information they'd given her! Luckily it was very mild and the antibiotics they'd given him in the hospital took care of it but that really wasn't the point. He could have ended up very sick because of the radiology department's incompetence.

Talk about lack of communication! My goodness, keep up with your stuff people, there are lives at stake! I am so afraid of one of my kids having a broken bone, we have never experienced it but I have a feeling it is on it's way. I have an 18 month old son who is way more active and rough than my girls ever were, he's a little dare devil.

That is a scary story and a good reminder to us to wash our hands after handling pets and especially before touching food or a little baby. Both my boys had medicine for a few days when they were born. My youngest had pneumonia at 6 months old as the nurse kept sending us away and in the end after several visits we took him to hospital and he was there ages as he was nearly dying. They did the same to him 3 months later and it took until he was almost 3 to get the all clear. My 7 year old had an MRI a week or so ago and had to be put to sleep wut it was only a day visit thank goodness, I hope to get good results soon.

I am glad to here your daughter got over that. My son was stopping over at my sister's the night and she called me the next morning crying asked me to meet her at the hospital, cause he had just fallen down the stairs. It was awful he had knocked two of his front teeth and they were still in his mouth but the root was sticking out of his gums, we were sent to another hospital in the end where the teeth were removed. He hed just turned three so they were still his milk teeth and when his adult teeth finnaly come through it is going to seem very weird looking at my son with a whole set of teeth.

I can imagine that it was weird...that's quite a while to go without any front teeth! I'm glad that his injuries weren't more serious! I guess it's true what they say, kids really are made of rubber!

How scary for you! I'm so glad your daughter is okay. My daughter was in the hospital for nearly a week with rotavirus when she was 26 months old. They had to put an IV in her foot in the ER because she was already dehydrating and couldn't keep anything on her stomach - my husband and I agree that that has been the worst experience of our lives. It was just a miserable week, and I'm so glad it's over - and that now there's a rotavirus vaccine for infants. Our next baby will definitely be getting that one!

OMG! I am so sorry that your daughter had to go through that! I have never been around a mean Bull Mastiff, all the ones I know are sweet but I wouldn't want to make one mad, they are pretty huge! I am relieved to see that she is alright, that is a tramatic thing for a child to have to go through.
