Do you take notice of aches and pains in your body ?

March 21, 2007 10:57am CST
For the past couple of weeks now I have been suffering pains in my chest. I put this down to stress, but now the pains seem to be spreading to my left arm as well. I'm not the type of person who panics at the least little ache or pain and don't like to troule my doctor for trivial things, but these pains are getting more troublesome. Do you go to the doctor for aches and pains or do you try to ignore them ?

You do know that chest pain, especially radiating into the left arm could be a sign of a heart attack? How old are you? Do you have a history of high blood pressure or cholesterol or heart problems in you or your family? Does anything you do make the pain better or worse? Is it a crushing pain, does it come and go? If you called the ambulance and I was on it I would strongly encourage you to be seen at the hospital ASAP. If you have aspirin available I suggest you take some now and call your dr. I'm not the type to see a dr either but chest pain and breathing difficulties should be taken seriously. Best wishes

Thank you for the very good advice hun, I have some asprin and will take some now. My blood pressure has gone up lately, it was checked the other day. There's no family history of heart attacks but I guess perhaps I shouldn't ignore this one.

This is great advice..please go have it checked...a heart attack can be preceeded by these exact symptoms...better to be safe than sorry...Don't ignore this!!! Please check with your doctor immediately or go to an emergency room...We have a very good friend that ignored his chest discomfort and radiating arm pain..we are lucky to have him...by the time he went in to the ER he had already experienced 2 heart attacks and had open heart surgery that same night...Please take this seriously...

The comments I have seen about going to hospital because of pain in chest radiating to left arm is exactly what I would say as well, also if you have pain in your jaw and in your back are symtomatic of heart problems. Also have you been having any panic attacks as this also causes symptoms like heart problems. I think a trip to the Doctor or hospital is the best plan and if it is nothing but stress then you have at least had it checked out. I don't think it is wise to ignore unusual pains in your body because that is a bit like an ostrich putting its head in the sand, and why wouldn't you want to get it checked out if it gives you piece of mind, I don't mean run into the Dr everytime you feel an ache or pain, just be wise about your health.

i guess, by the time you get this, you have already consulted a doctor. recycledgoth, health should be the no. 1 priority in life and we just cannot afford to ignore it. you must see a doctor immediately and in the meanwhile modify your lifestyle. this is not to scare you atall, this comes as my concern. i work with an ace cardiologist and i see innumerable patients inflicted everyday. don't you think prevention is always better than cure? good luck

Thank you hun, yes I saw my doctor, not that they seemed particularly worried about the chest pains. I am still having these pains and I guess I might just have to go to the hospital and get them to check me over.

I have rheumatoid arthritis in my knees and carpal tunnel in my hands but I know when I have the pains what is causing it , on the other hand pal if you get pains in the chest or arms get a doctor , I am not saying that it is your heart because it could be stress or anything but my hubby has heart problems and the sooner they are looked at the better . please don't put it off , it could be something or nothing but it could be serious , please get an appointment xx

I agree with the others about the pain in your chest and going into your arm and I think you should have it checked immediately. I don't go to the doctor for every little pain, but if I had what you have, I would have been with him as soon as I had the pain. It may be nothing but you can't afford to take chances. Best of luck and I hope it is nothing more than stress. Post again and let us know how you get on. Take care and rest as much as possible.

Your doctor likes to be bothered, he gets paid for it. And it doesn't do anyone any good to worry like that until you are clutching your chest and collapsing from a heart attack. The sooner it's caught, the less damage. When your chest hurts, it's because heart tissue is in distress. If you ignore it, it's just getting more damaged (usually a clogged artery that isn't allowing oxygen to get to a certain area). If caught early, the heart can recover, but if you let it be damaged, you could be allowing major problems be a common factor for the rest of your life.

Please make an appointment NOW! It could be stress, a pulled muscle or any other no of things but with chest pains spreading to your left shoulder or arm - this is a warning sign and you really should get it checked out honey! I try not to go to the dr for every little niggle - see if it clears up first but in your situation you need to get checked - if you are still sitting reading this at least phone and ask their advice!

I have taken some asprin, and will phone when the surgery opens for an appointment. Thanks, I guess it's silly of me to try to ignore it.

I cannot add much to the discussion, since it was communicated that seeing a doctor is encouraged, some more strongly than others. My symptoms a few years ago was extreme dizziness, which can be another sign of an attack, but fortunately for me it was all stress, and a need to put a little order into my life. One night I was having a fitful sleep, waking every hour or two. Then one waking episode was intense, it felt like I was hit in the abdomen, and very, very dizzy. I thought it was it for me. It turns out I jerked in a way in my sleep it did something to my back. I think would prefer to go the way my grandfather did -- he just lost consciousness and stopped breathing while playing his daily solitaire, and that was it. Or at least he didn't complain about anything except crooked politians.

I have NO medical so I cant sit there and keep going to the doc for each ache and pain. I have to deal with it on my own. I have a sprained ankle, sprained almost 4 weeks (as of Friday)and the only way I can care for it is keep trying to get it better. But its not better yet and this frustrates me. I do tap dance for school and yoga and now I am limited in these two classes which sucks! Plus I begin work on Monday and so that sucks too. I cant rest all the time but I try. So since I hurt my left knee in 1998 I have been really tuned to my body. I know its aches and its pains. I know what hurts. And I do my best to care for stuff as it comes into a problem. But with no medical I just gotta do the best I can!

Definetely go to the dr. I went to mine feeling fine and found out I have high blood pressure and high cholestorol. I'm on meds now but if I didn't know this I may have had a heart attack. Please go to the dr. and they can give you something or go to the er. I prefer going to the drs. before going to the er but sometimes you can't be picky. Good luck!!

Pains for prolonged period of time (2 weeks) should not be ignored. This is one of the symptoms of CVA (Cardio-vascular attack). Please go to a cardiologist right away, pronto!

Honestly, I try my best to ignore them. If they get overbearing I'll eventually go if I have to. I'd almost rather not know whats going on though. I'm too afraid of finding out what might be wrong with me.

Hello there. I am the type of person who doesn't really go to the doctor unless it's really something serious or that I feel that I am not getting any better. I don't believe in taking in medicine/pills when I feel bad because I don't want to be immuned to these. But now, since I am pregnant I became "paranoid" (for the lack of term)and more conscious with my health since I am not only thinking of myself but more of my son.

Ok, I am an EMT and you need to get to a hospital, ASAP! Your body may be having something minor going on, that can be treated much more easily then a major heart attack. If you are still at home waiting for another answer, I beg you to go now. This is nothing to fool around with. If you are a female, pls remember...females are more likely to die from a heart attack then a male.

If it is causing you trouble and that you are concerned enough I think it's only wise to consult with your doctor. If it's only stress and you don't want to go to the doctor yet, then try to get some relaxation done, meditation perhaps, or a day at the spa or something like that to relieve your stress, then if the pain persists then go see your doctor. But I really think you should see your doctor, if it's really just stress then your doctor can recommend ways for you to relieve that stress, but if you opt for self medication strategies then I suggest you follow thru first with stress relieving activities then go from there. As for me, like you I'm also a stressed out person, as much as possible I try not to go to the doctor but when something I'm feeling, (not necessarily pain) becomes too much for me, I consult my doctor and ask advise on what I'm supposed to do.

I usually ignore them. Most aches and pain do tend to wear off after a while so I'm not too worried about them. Sometimes I have problems with my left knee. I had fluid in it as a child and for some reason it seemed to weaken my knee. So every now and again, I have to wear a knee brace for a while because the pain makes it impossible to walk properly. I only go to the doctor if it gets worse and worse, because thats when I need prescription pain pills. 9 times out of 10 though, I do fine with the brace for a week or so.

Chest pains are not trivial and doctors are there to look at even the smallest of complaints... do hurry and make an appointment as soon as possible.... the more you delay the more you are causing your system the stress of not taking medical measures on time. And chest pains that radiate towards arms or radiate to the back are bound to be trouble! pls take care and good luck with your diagnosis! if it were me I would just walk into any doc's office and have him do the whole package on me just to rule out heart!Heart health is after all everything! Good luck again dear
