A cemetery, for sure.
I actually think that some cemeteries are beautiful.
There are some very old and amazing ones in the town next to ours and I've driven out there to take pictures of the grounds a few times. There're very big long weeping willows that sway and shade the tombstones that date all the way back to the early 1800's.

I get what your saying. There have been many cemeteries that I have walked through because they had very old markers. I love walking through and seeing all the differences and the aging.
Most often, the older markers have the most information. :)

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. Often walking through a cemetery, I will try to find the oldest, youngest, and freshest. And it is often sad finding the baby markers.
I have always wanted to go to Scotland and Ireland to see the cemeteries there.
It seems like such a beautiful mystical land. :)
I bet it was great! :)

I would def. rather live next to a garbage dump lol. I'd just buy a million flowers and bake fres cookies everyday to cover up the smell =P
There is one exception, I would rather live next to a MILITRAY cemetary if thats a choice also lol. I dont know why, they would seem less sinister to me.

Million of flowers and fresh baked cookies, huh?
Well, I never would have thought of that. :)
Not sure if I would prefer being next to a military cemetery...as they would most likely be the people with the more traumatic deaths.

yeah i dont know why I would prefer military...maybe because I really supprort all our troops and I dont find military cemetarys as...."spooky" as normal ones. Because the people there (in my mind-i could be wrong) are more heroic, and good...like theres no murderers (so to speak-i dont see soldiers that way) or criminals there. I dont know lol I'm just rambling

Wouldn't you worry that your fresh baked cookies would take on the smell and taste of the garbage dump? But, I guess if you burnt some you could just throw them out your window towards the dump!

i would choose the cemetery rather that the garbage dump...I can't live in a smelly place around me. And it is not healthy, the air is polluted by the rubbish. I have no problem living next to cemetery as our previous house is just 10 steps from the cemetery. Of course sometimes i will get scared when the night come...but,..actually there is nothing with the cemetery actually.

I would rather live by the cemetary. They cant hurt you.We live a few houses form the garbage truck service. It always looks yucky even thought it is clean.

A cemetary would be much more pleasant, ususally they are well looked after and its not as if the inhabitents ever misbehave is it! I ften go for walks through local graveyards, we always make a game of seeing what the oldest headstone is but they rarely last more than two or three hundred years so you don't get back very far usually. We have some from the late 1700s that are still visible here and there though most are victorian. You also get lots of wildlife in cemetaries, definately better than having a rubbish tip on your doorstep.

This is a complexing delemma for me because I am both Resourcful (Garbage Dumps can yield unbelievable treasures) and I enjoy Quiet Living ( Cemetaries have whole populations of mainly Quiet folks!)
Dang, Lady Bee! You've given me something to ponder as I am planning to build a house or two in the very near future! LOL! :)

This is great! The first brave soul that ponders the positive side of living next to a dump!!! :)
Your right...the trash can hold many treasures. Heck, it even had my daughter's brand new shoes! LOL But it can also be smelly. Visit it yes for a treasure hunt...but to live next to it, Not sure if I could do it.

This is a really good question since both would be a difficult thing to decide upon. I think I'd go with the Cemetery to live next to. Yes I might have to deal with seeing things or feeling things from there but I get that a lot anyways no matter where I live. I seem to attract that sort of attention so since I'd have that anyway I might as well not have the smell from the dump let alone the noise. Now that is one nice thing about the cemetary. It would be quiet. That I could handle.

What I would give for quiet neighbors...the cemetary..most definitely. I live a few miles from a dump. The reason I know it, is that about every 3 or 4 years in the summer, when it is hot, we get this nasty smell. I could never figure out what it was or where it came from. Until I was told it was from the dump. I could not live next to it and smell it more often and stronger.
Cemetary gets my vote.

I would actually LOVE to live next to a cemetary. I've always loved them, as they are so meloncholy and beautiful. My mom and I used to go to old cemetaries when I was a little girl and make rubbings from the old headstones. No way would I ever live next to a garbage dump! It makes me think of the Labyrinth... the bog of eternal stench!

I would MUCH rather live next to a cemetery-- they tend to be well-maintained and park-like. I'm not really too worried about spirits walking around... I like to think they are friendly, rather than menacing.
I am pretty sensitive to smells. As is, I live downwind of a paper mill, and that's annoying enough on still mornings... I couldn't even imagine the stench of living next to a dump.

What does living downwind from a paper mill smell like?

Who the heck would want to live next to a garbage dump and get the oh so lovely smells especially on a hot humid day?--LOL
Cemeteries can actually be very beautiful and peaceful--I haven't been to one in awhile but they are fascinating to go through and pick out the especially old gravemarkers and gravestones..sometimes the old ones are true works of art they are so beautifully carved--sometime I would especially love to visit the cemeteries of where Civil War soldiers were buried..don't ask me why..of course I did have ancestors that fought in the war..uh...both sides..my direct line were the confederates since my one line were Virginians
...there is a church a ways down from me...the Dutch Reformed Church..it's changed quite a bit over the years but was built in the 1700s--they still have the very, very, small cemetery there since both, the church and cemetery are historic landmarks...well...here's a bit of info for you all....my great-grandmother's brother Francis, married a woman named Lana A. Debevoise... a decendent of a very old Dutch family that came here to "New Amsterdam" in 1659 before it was renamed New York...they settled all around the Queens and Brooklyn area of NY...well, I knew, since I was doing a family roots search that some of the Debevoise family had settled in Queens but I was bowled over when lo and behold one time I was walking in the cemetery of the Dutch Reformed Church and there were a few old, and I mean OLD gravemarkers of the Debevoise family..the writing was very very faded but I could make some of it out even though it was in Dutch..I did study a tad of German and the words are fairly similar...but it just blew me away to find that..

That is totally cool!!!!
I hope you took rubbings of those markers before the erode any more. :)
If not, maybe you can get back there and take a rubbing and a pic for recording purposes. :)
Alot of times, a rubbing will show more detail than a photo.
Oh how I wish I could stumble onto such a great find!!!
Thanks for sharing!

I would rather live next to a cemetery. The neighbors would be quiet... except maybe on Halloween. LOL
We have a dump near where we live and you can always tell which way the wind is blowing. No thanks!

COOL TOPIC!
I'm definitely opting for the cemetery... I believe their souls have left this place and aren't forever residing in that lot anyway. Some cemetaries are very beautifully landscaped too ; )
Smelling that garbage would be the worst! I'm all about candles, incense and smell-goods in general~ that could get very expensive trying to cover up the smell of rubbish... plus it would attract bugs, mice, rats, and strays!

I am fond of candles and incense too. But I don't think any sane amount would cover up the smell from a dump. ha ha :)

I would definitely prefer a cemetery over a garbage dump. I would not want to smell the nasty odors from the garbage dump plus hear the truck come by and make a lot of noise. Cemeteries are very quiet so there is no problem with noises and if my loved ones were in the cemetery next to me, I could visit them often if I needed.

A cemetery or a garbage dump? There is no question about which I would chose to live beside. Hands down it would be the cemetery. The garbage dump not only smells but also has vermin meaning cockroaches mice and rats.. The only thing you would have to put up with at a cemetery is kids coming out there to neck and pull fool pranks. It would probably be the safest place to live as a lot of people fear the cemetery especially at night.
