how good is your password? - passwords for email and instant messenger accounts

Picking good passwords is an important element of keeping your system safe and your information private. Good passwords are impossible to guess and difficult to crack, but they can also be hard to think up. But what's harder than generating and memorizing different passwords for people who have multiple email and instant messenger accounts? OK. I have 6 email accounts (1-twicemail, 1-gmail, 1-outlook, and 3-yahoo) and 4 instant messenger accounts (ym, skype, gtalk, and X-IM)... but no hassle whatsoever for me though coz I maintain one password for all of these accounts..:P well, I just don't wanna mess up with my password when I wanted to log on to any of these accounts. how about you, do you maintain one password for any accounts you will sign up which requires you for a password? if you don't, how do you manage supplying the right password for the right account without messing up? do you write them down on a piece of paper and get that list when you needed to log on? or you're just gifted with real sharp memory?:P do share your thoughts...:P

Hmm I do the same too Rexy, same password for all accounts, that way I don't mess up everyday. I have 2 gmail ids, 3 yahoo, one hotmail...and all same password. Its the same for the messengers too obviously. I have the same passwords for online accounts too. It's not that I can't remember but its easier when its the same.

Very good topic... would love to get your some ideas here.. I use three passwords that I randomly use for all my accounts.. so if it's not this... it's that.. I would love to make use of a password generator but don't know how reliable they are.. or actually how they work... LOL.. I wished I could subscribe to this link.. hmmm...

I do try to keep the same password for a lot of my accounts, but sometimes they need extra letters or compulsory numbers included, so I do change them, I keep a book with all my passwords in and log in details. I enter lots of competitions too so I have all the details logged for different sites, so it's easy to look up, especially if I haven't used a particular site for some time, my memory doesn't always serve me well.

Good Grief, how do you keep up with all that? I have 2 yahoo mails and a hotmail one. I have an interesting password for them. I try not to do too much cause it is such a hassle to remember things.

I'm like you lol, I have one password and I use it for all of my accounts such as MSN messenger, here, my email accounts, and various other things that I'm signed up for. I'm absolutely terrified of losing them or not remembering them and not being able to get into somewhere so it just makes a lot more sense for me to use just one password for everything lol. My partner is exactly the same too. My dad on the other hand, uses his laptop for work, and he has so many different passwords lol. He actually has them all written down on a piece of paper that he keeps inside his wallet. Not his user names - just the name of the website, and his passwords lol. That way, if he loses them, he won't be able to get into his accounts, but neither will anyone else :P

tips i always follow is that - the password should be long , - it should be different for every account you make - it must not be something that you always say - make it a random mix of capitals and smalls and numbers or even special characters

I have many many passwords. Some of them I use the same password for, other logins I use different passwords according to what kind of site it is and what kind of password requirements it has. Its all easy for me since I use an Autofill tool called Roboform that keeps up to 10 logins in the free version and automatically signs me in when I come to those sites. So I really don't need to remember passwords all that often since I never really type them in.

I have one master password, which I use for just about everything, and I feel pretty secure with it. I also have a separate master password that I use for PayPal, E-gold, etc, that was originally randomly generated by Roboform for PayPal. I really couldn't tell you what that one is even if I wanted to. It's just saved in Roboform for PayPal, and I just copy and paste it whenever I sign up for a new payment processor, and then let Roboform save that information for future logins. Now, in case my system crashes, I do have all my Roboform data backed up to disc and also into my Yahoo briefcase, so I won't have to worry about my password information getting lost. Without Roboform, I wouldn't even be able to get into my own PayPal account.

i agree, im actually doing the same thing, im using the same password for all my accounts...the sad thing is at work, every 2 months our password changes and ive been with the company for 3 years now..we have lots of tools that were using requiring for diff logins and passwords..what i did was store all the login and password in my z drive..although i get to memorize the password in each logins, but its best to keep a back up just in case you forget..bcoz there are some logins that will be revoked after a couple of retries when entering wrong password...
