I'm still trying to dig myself out of it. Most of the money I owe is b/c of interest, late payments, etc. Really be careful with credit cards...you MUST make more than the minimum payment every month, use cash if you can, and try to get the interest lower. Don't get too many either. It's god to help you establish credit, but you really need self-control. I didn't and charged just about anything, then realized I couldn't keep up with the payments. My advice: Be careful and responsible. :)

I have 3 or 4 credit cards. One is a MasterCard and the others are for specific department stores. Be careful how you use them, or you can be paying them off for the next 20-30 years at a very outrageous interest rate. I pay most of them in full each month, unless it's for an expensive, major item...but I always pay more than the amount they request as a minimum payment.

I do not think it is a bad thing, I think it can help build your credit as long as you use it responsibly. I got a credit card when I was in college, and I only used it in case of an emergency. I had it for about 2 years before I even needed to use it, it was activated, and I kept getting the credit up and up evven without using it. Once I started working I started to use it a little here and there just to start my credit rating. I would buy something with it and then pay off the bill so I made sure that whatever I did buy was something that I could just pay off right away in the first statement. That really helped my rating. I still have my same credit card today and it has been gosh, almost 20 years since I have been a cardholder with them. however I would not go and get a bunch more, eventually once you are comfortable with your credit scores and the like, you can always look to get a second card, then as promotions occur, should you get to a point where you spent a lot on one card but you need to pay it off, and do not want to pay the high interest rate, getting a new card on a promotional APR like 0 to 3% you can just take that card and pay off on the lower interest rate...that is what we do and I say it definetly saves us money.

Please use credit card only when it is direly needed for emergency. Otherwise, you will get into problem and it is a pain in the neck. I have had bad experience with credit card. Your debt will never get cleared. This is OK for those with a lot of money but not for poor guys. Cheating is too much by banks which offer credit card. Recently it had happened with me- for a credit of INR 280/- these banks charged a penalty of 390/- for crossing the payment by a day. I was waiting for the statement by post, it did not fetch up and i had to find out about my balance thru net and send the bill. Due to holiday in between the cheque was not cleared by the bank and for a day's delay, the bank has penalised my with 390/. If I was a regualr defaulter, i do not mind. This is the first time it happened and i have being this card for the last 3 years. So far no default. I requested the bank for waiver and they refused.
Now I have told them to cancel my card and i said that I would not like to use it anymore since the bank is a cheat and they are living on the blood sucked from the poor.
I have also threatened that if they do not cancel they will be taken to consumer court.
So be careful.

We no longer have a credit card because when we retired we decided that it was better than we live on what money came into our bank account rather that buying on credit.
It is all too easy to spend/buy things when you can put them on the Credit card so be very careful with it. Make sure that if you do use it, that you pay off in full the balance every month so you don't incur any penalties for late payment etc as this will also affect your credit rating.
Good luck with it but do take care. :)

They are nice to have in an emergency, but they can send you into deep debt if you aren't careful.

Credit Cards can be a Good thing if you use them wisely. Make sure you only use them in Emergency's. That is what most people never learn and find themselves getting into Credit Card debt over and over and over.
Good Luck

I agree with the other responces. It's good to have a credit card for emergencies, but be careful...it can get out of hand, and you end up paying a lot of money out on interest...if you can't pay it all in a month...try and double the minimum payment.

I have a debit credit card if that counts i had a regular credit card when i first turned 18 and had to drop it because i was getting in debt upto my eyeballs. I think it is great if you are older and more responsible with it you can manage it better. If you were the age i was then i say no it is a bad ideal now i'm 19 and won't probally get another ever maybe or if i do maybe in my thirtys.

credit card is good for convenience and emergency needs. but one must use it wisely. it is always best to pay whatever you incurred within the month to avoid the interest and charges.

My husband and I have 1. We do a lot of shopping online, and it's a must for that. However, we've always made a policy of not charging more than we can afford to pay off at the end of the month. Used wisely, credit cards are fine. If you have self-control, you'll do okay. Otherwise, don't even start.
