Rude Cashier

I went out with my coworker to dinner in the mall just across our office. I already ate dinner but I needed to go out to buy some cigarette. My friend was having dinner and I was having fruit salad for dessert when I decided to buy a meal. I went from one stall to another and finally settled to the first one. I was handing the payment to the clerk when she smirked and shook her head as if in chagrin and disgust. I ordered the cheapest meal and that made her rude, smirking and shaking her head. I got so pissed off, I demanded she give back the money to me. She was all smile now, but that didn't change my mind. The order was being taken cared of, and the manager was just beside her. I walked out on her with my money, giving her scolding she wouldn't forget. I don't understand that girl, there were so many other stalls where people were swarming, and I was the only one in line at that stall. I just hope the manager would teach her to respect the customers at all time.

I have been in the service industry myself. You see some nice people and some rude ones too, but the rude ones never last. I was in charge of a cafeteria in a shopping mall. The tiny cafe always used to be chock-a-bloc with people and most of the time, I needed to man it all alone. Handling all the customers, warming up their snacks and serving them across the counter and most importantly remembering who has paid and how much and who is yet to pay, used to be a huge challenge, but I never forgot to be friendly. I made it a point to remember my customers by their faces. I would remember their eating preferences. Simple things like serving their regular order without their needing to ask makes them feel special and important. They would come back again and again. We would even trade small talk if the crowd was lean. One very busy day, an old man came over and ordered a cup of coffee. The coffee was scalding hot and the old man was having a tough time, trying to cool it down to drink it. I noticed and asked for the cup. I took another empty Styrofoam cup and tossed it back and forth, cooling it. I handed the man the coffee and went back to my work. The crowd moved on and there was a lull. The man was still around. I inquired whether he would like to have anything else. He declined, but said that he was really touched by my simple gesture. He thanked me and left. It was then that I realized how easy it is to be nice to strangers. I can never forget that.

Simple gestures can really move people. I used to cry when somebody help me out with little things. There was this one time when I was on the bus speeding at breakneck speed, swerving right and left. I was at the edge of my seat, shouting the driver to stop. Thankfully, the woman sitting next to me yelled at the top of her lungs to please stop. I got off with suppressed tears. I can't remember the other incidents when I got teary-eyed when somebody did something nice to me when I was a bit upset. There are so many nice people in the food industry. They don't smile, but when I come back, they're ready to take my orders, and go to the table when I need something. It was the cheapest hangout for smokers and the coffee "addicts". People are swarming the place every hour. Coffee and sandwiches and steak are yummy and affordable, but the crew are nice and warm to all their customers. They don't speak much, but they do smile from time to time. They make sure you got what you need.

I have worked in food service for many years as a manager, and there is no excuse for workers to be rude.
It all comes down to good customer service, that is their job, to treat customers with respect and courtesy.
After all, if it wasn't for the customers, they wouldn't have a job. I always told my crew, it's not really the boss who signs your paychecks, it's the customers, so always treat them as you would want to be treated.

Well i don't know why she thinks she's superior. I've worked in food service and i know she doesnt make that much money. if you dont' want to spend 20 dollars on a single meal then thats your business. i don't even like to spend more than 5 when i go out lol. maybe since the manager seen this then she will get fired and i like how you handled that. Good Work!:)

Why was this cashier smirking and shaking her head? Was it because you ordered the cheapest meal, or because you had already eaten fruit salad and were now ordering your main meal?
Either way, it's very impolite and the probable reason all the other stalls were full and hers empty. People had probably come across her rudeness before and opted for other cashiers.
You're quite entitled to eat what you want to in a food hall, in any order you wish and as frequently as you wish. This is the service available to you, and the cashiers should know customer relations, and not make any comment or gesture as to how they think you should eat. Well done for demanding your money back and giving her a scolding. I hope the Manager told her a thing or two as well, and that he/she deducted the money for the prepared meal from her till or wages, thus ensuring it won't happen again, with you or any other customer.
Courtesy costs nothing, especially when it earns your employer a sale.
Brightest Blessings.

It does make you irrate when you get treated like that, whatever happened to "the customer is always right" I don't know what their problem is they are getting paid for serving customers, so what have they got to be annoyed about. I myself always try to be curteous to all people who serve in shops etc, but on the odd time I have got a bit annoyed.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I have worked in customer service and for the most part the customer is always right, but sometimes they push too far. I worked in a cafeteria making half of what the people I was serving did and I had people fight me over a penny. We had a franchise and on our menu it was a penny more and I had people fight with me for about 10 minutes about it. If you were making $20 an hour would you stand there and fight for a penny?

I have noticed that clerks are just very friendly anymore...how did she know if you ordered that meal because of price or because it was your favorite...she is paid per hour not commission it shouldnt matter to her what you order...we live on a tight budget...i often order the cheapest thing on the menu and drink water to keep the price down on the rare occasion we eat out...i dont think being frugual is a bad thing more people should give it a try...

what does she think?? and what was the manager doing?? this is not done. being in customer services and in any other profession for that matter, she just cannot afford to do this. i think politeness and caress is the key to success. i guess that girl would never see that with such sort of behavior. i would have given a written complaint.

Wow, people that work with people really need to take some sort of human resources class or something so they can figure out how to deal with people. Acting rude and making facial expressions definitely isn't how to deal with people.

I hate it when that happens and sometimes I just let it pass but most of the time I would give the person a piece of my mind.

What is wrong with people nowadays? A customer is a customer. Ordering the $5 set lunch doesn't make you less of a person than one who orders the $25 steak.
I am not sure if she was "smirking" because you ordered the cheapest meal. If so, no pity for her from me. I hate rude lasses. Otherwise, she might be expressing her weird thoughts on something else altogether. In that case, she still deserves a scolding since she is not being focused on her job. :P

i myself work as a cashier and i always try to be courteous to the customer... i also always greet and smile at every single customer that i serve no matter how tired i am... unless the customer is being rude to me and shouting at me, i won't be rude to them... even then, i won't dare to be rude to them as i know that i can hold on to the job because of them... so, i know how you feel in your situation and i hope that cashier got a lesson from this experience...

Customer service is the first point of contact for all sort of companies. Customer service supposedly to deliver warm and friendly service to customers as well as helping their enquiries. If customer was treated badly by customer service representative, customer will not come back to them anymore. I still don't understand what's people up to these days. Even if the customer was cranky or rude, customer service still need to serve the customers with friendly service but not to return with rude behaviour. I've now working in the customer service in the call centre and I never deliver any bad service even though some of customers are rude.

Some people just have no manners. I used to work on a reception in a hotel and I always tried to smile at customers and make sure I did everything I could for them.
I really can't stand ignorant, rude people and if I was that one's manager I'd be giving her a piece of my mind.

I can't stand it when you get rude service, there is no need for it. If they are just having a bad day, they shouldn't take it out on the customer. It shouldn't matter what you buy, you should get good service. I would have loved to have seen her face after you gave her a scolding and by the sounds of it, this is what she needed. Good on you!

I hope her boss said something to her. She's there to serve you and you're the one giving her the business so it shouldn't make any difference to her what you order. They're making a sale and they should be courteous to every customer. Rude people annoy me.
