I think homework is good preparation for life as it is the start of individual learning when children have to work out things for themselves.
My daughter is 5 and has a book to read every week and a maths worksheet every week. I think for her age she should also be learning spellings every week and have a new book every day. That is what I was doing at that age.

luckily, right now my children are lucky and have little to none. I have seen though many children loaded down with homework. So much that they are up well into the night. I honestly don't think they should have that much homework. they already spend quite a bit of time in school. They need to have time to be free and enjoy their lives as well. For those that say, it builds character or it prepares them for the future, try working your 8 hours a day, then coming home from work and putting at least another 4 hours in doing reports or something. Never mind that you need to eat dinner & relax.

I think my kids get way to much homework. I mean, they are in school for 7 hours or so, and then they come home and have an hour or more of homework to do. My middle schooler sometimes has hours worth of homework. I think it is insane, kids just don't have time to be kids anymore you know? Besides homework, then they have book reports and science projects that are now mandatory too. With 4 kids that is alot of schoolwork. It's crazy.

If they live in the UK, I would say no. It seems that every time I turn around they are off school for a week or two. I think it is every 8 or 9 weeks, they get at least a week off. Potato harvest? They don't use school kids for that anymore but they still get the time off.
If the child is older, then the more work the better. It will get them ready for the working world.

In our school district the kids in grades 2-6 have the most homework. This seems backwards to me. I would think that the higher grades should have more homework than the little ones.
