Well, I am an Irish citizen and I have Irish blood but my hair is quite dark. My husband's family is all very drk haired or very fair with nothing in between. I have one blond child and one dirty blond child who both have Irish blood. A lot of the Irish with red hair actually have NORSE blood, as the Vikings did a great deal of raiding and intermarrying with the irish. Did you know Dublin, Waterford and Wexford were all founded by Vikings? They cruised up and down the Liffey and Shannon in their long boats, producing half Norse children everywhere they went.

No I did not know that. And I am going to have to look up NORSE because I am clueless as to who they are also. My children all started out blonde , as did I, and now only one is still blonde the others are all dark red. See now you have me curious, and btw, just my opinion, you are lucky to be an Irish citizen. I hear it is so pretty there.

Well just got finished looking up my name (both first and last)first doesn't count for much but my surname is norse and irish but mainly norse. Which means I guess that I also have Irish and Norse because my mothers maiden name is Irish. I don't know I so confused.

Hi,
Well i am Scottish but no doubt I have some Irish in me if my ancestors are completely irish. Idon't really know where my family comes from before my granny. I should find out.
I also link red hair with irish people. It seems to be the stereotypical irish person but I don't think that it means youare irish.
Irish people are just lovely and most of them have such lovely accents. I have brown hair but I have very risy cheeks of the highlands.

Hello tiffsmom.....
Both of my fathers parents were born in Ireland and immigrated to the US as children in about 1894. The two families arranged the marriage during the trip and they were married when my grandmother was 16. She had 11 boys and 1 girl. Many of the kids and grand kids have red hair and most of the family has hot tempers regardless of hair color.

Wow 12 kids. I guess that was the norm back then My grandma Brown had 13 I think (there's a bunch). I'm not sure where she came from but her last name was Church before she got married I think I will look that last name up also. Thanks for responding.

Red hair doesn't mean you are definately of Irish decent, but your ancestors probalby come from somewhere in that region of the world, such as England, Scotland (red-hair is actually more common among scots than irish), or Northern European countries. As for the mean temper, that's not generally genitic, the red-hair just makes people notice it more because of stero-typing.
:-)
Also, tons of Irish people don't have red hair. My entire family is Irish on both sides (thats about 40 people presently living), but none of us have red hair. I believe I saw a program that said that most of the red-Irish are decended from invaders that settled on the East half of the island and in Britian, pushing the "native" irish to the western half.

Thanks for your response. I'm not sure how to reply without sounding stupid. My dad's last name comes from both Irish and norse so i'm still not sure if I have Irish blood. But here's hoping.

Heya! I am Irish, English, Scottish, and Welsh. But mostly Irish and English. My paternal great-grandparents are from Ireland (him) and England (her).
No one in our family has red hair. Mine is brown, going grey. However, in the sunlight, I have lots of red highlights.
I lived off and on in Ireland in the mid-late 90's and was engaged to a wonderful Irishman. I rarely saw red-heads over there. Most were dark haired.
Tempers ... while mom and I do have tempers, we attribute that more to the Scots than the Irish. Like mentioned by a previous poster, the Irish are fairly laid-back.

Actually some parts of Italy, they have red hair. Can't remember much info on that, just remember reading it somewhere. I'm Irish, mostly brown hair with lots of red "undertones" in it, very pale complexion, & freckles :) 2 of my daughters have strawberry blonde hair. As far as the temper, I don't know, because I'm also German and Dutch, so I just classify myself as a tall, stubborn, drunk lol ok, not a drunk but I can drink :) Guess I'm lucky, the Dutch counter acted the Irish and gave me alittle bit of height.

Not necessarily. The red hair originally came from the Nordic people, and eventually to the Irish. Interesting little tidbit of info I came across one day. I am French Irish with a little Native American mixed in. I myself have (naturally) brown hair with so much red in it that in certain light it is red. My youngest child has bright red hair...and a hellish temper. LOL

No, you're not necessarily Irish if you have red hair. I have a friend who is of 100% Czech origin and he is red-headed. And, of course, many other Celts, such as the Scots, are red-headed, and many people of English blood. Also, not all Irish people have mean tempers. I'm 3/4 Irish and I don't. I have a temper, but I don't get mad easy and I get over it quickly.

Yes, I have Irish blood and am very proud of it. Re questions about red hair and Irish blood - no, I do not think that is always true. Many Irish people have red hair but so do people from Norway that I have met. Really a good discussion you have. Hope my answer helps.
