So I am sitting here today off sick from work. My nose is bright red and running, my eyes are running, my face is blotchy, I have a headache, I'm shivering, and I am sneezing every two minutes and scaring the cats to death! LOL! Yes - you've guessed it- I have fallen prey to the ghastly common cold! Don't you just hate them! And no - I'm not looking for sympathy (though that is always appreciated!) - but any ideas or natural remedies how to shake the b**** off quickly! Any contributions appreciated. Cheers!

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Please take care of yourself. As to me, I hate cold. Acturally, I think everybody hates cold, cause it's an irremediable disease. Everyday there will be someone who catch cold. As soon as you caught a cold, you have to prepare for a long-time suffer, cause it's very torturous. The annoying cold affects people very much. But it's sad that no medicine has been invented to get rid of cold totally. The snot maybe the most annoying thing in catching a cold. We just can't breathe. Well, someone once told me an effective way to get rid of the troublesome snot. That is, to prepare some not very hot water, and put salt in it. Then, wash your nose with it. I haven't tried it cause I'm very healthy and seldom get disease. Maybe you can try it. Good luck!

I have a cold too. I have a stuffed up nose and sore throat. My nose is red and I am cold. I deal with it by making sure I eat healthily even though I don't feel like it. Drinking lots of orange juice and keeping active. I find the worst thing to do is to sit in from of the TV feeling sorry for myself, I just feel worse and worse like that.

I hope you get well soon Rosie, colds have a nasty habit of bringing you down and when you get low you just feel that everything is too much. This winter I have been fortunate and colds and flus have avoided me, I think I put this down to going to the gym five days a week and sweating those nasty bugs out of my system! A hot toddy usually does the trick for me that and a nice hot bath, steam is ideal. If I get a blocked nose I use menthol crystals to unblock it. Here's a hug my friend and hope you are back on the road to recovery soon x

Well I am coming in on the tail-end of this discussion it seems but you know what they say "you can take aspirin, and cold meds and the cold will go away in 7 days, Or.... you can do nothing and the cold will go away in 7 days" LOL. They are the biggest menace I agree,. I hate that foggy headed burning nose and eyes thing I get. The absolute worst is the cough that hangs in for what seems like a month after the effects of the cold have left. My only tried and true things that make it easier to function meds are : Tylenol sore Throat, that helps at bedtime, during the day it's "DayQuil" for me that seems to work so that I can work medicine. Hang in there kiddo it's a miserable time - the 3rd day is the worst and then you begin to mend. Oh I have also heard if you catch it right at the onset - "Airborne" tablets are wonderful!!! So good luck - be well and take good care of yourself.

I think you are actually right! Whatever you do, the cold wil run its course, and get better in it's own time! And today IS the third day - so I can definately agree it has been the worst so far!!!

Yep I agree with you there - colds are awful. I had one that kept coming back for about 2 months and I never did find anything to shake it off. One thing that helped reduce the symptoms though was good old Beechams cold and flu plus tablets, they helped me feel less groggy and reduced the symptoms. I'd also recommend getting a bottle of Synex or something to clear your blocked nose because that's a major part of what makes you feel so awful in the first place. Preventions better of course so get yourself some high dose vitamin C tablets and take them daily, it definately helps keep colds at bay. Hope you feel better soon Rosie!

Oh Rosie you'd do anything to get a day off work hahaha, yes I'm only joking. I bet you feel really, really rough and I'm sorry for you. there never seems anything around that actually will cure a cold. But if you drink plenty of fluids, keep wrapped up, have hot milk, honey and whisky plus a couple of paracetamol you won't feel a thing!! It works for me!!! Plus don't forget - feed a cold/starve a fever, so eat my dear, just eat. Hope you feel better soon x

Two days ago I just had a cold. All I got to do is to take two tablets and drink warm water then take a nap. Two hours later I woke up and feel better. Then at night I took the two special tables that makes me drowsy, then the next morning I feel much better although I still feel a little bit headache and runny nose. Make sure you drink a lot of warm water...it will assist you in recovery.

here we get a tea prepared with cinnamon, cardamom and black pepper and few other spices mixed. Its really good cure for cold other wise just put some ginger in the tea water and let it simmer for a while and then add milk and other things . half inch of ginger and a bit of cinnamon in two cups of water. have that its really good. Or else look for herbal tea in your area. They are good for running nose and headaches. I also hate coming on of cold. I always keep masala tea of everesty handy but I am not aware if its available in other parts of the world.

I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well, Rosie. I realize you posted this 3 days ago, so I hope you're feeling a lot better now. For future reference, you can pick up Echineacha and Vitamin C supplements at Dollar General stores for $5 plus tax. Take as directed with lots of fluids at the first sign of a sniffle, sneeze or scratchy throat and your cold will not only be less severe, it will go away sooner. Take straight honey for sore throats. Honey is a natural anti-bacterial substance, not just an old wives' tale. Putting it in your tea with lemon does help, but taking it straight from the spoon is better. Gargle lukewarm salt water to help kill infection in the mouth and throat. Clean your ears with peroxide whether they ache or not. Let it bubble for as long as you can stand it, then sop it back out of your ears gently with Q-tips. Your ears connect to your throat and this will not only kill any infection that you may already have in your ear(s), but it will prevent any spreading of infection/bacteria between your ears and throat. Take care & get well soon:)

That's exactly why I use natural things to fight colds, cold medicines just mask the symptoms and cause the cold to last longer than it would if one were to take nothing at all. Glad you're feeling better :)

Thanks - and - yes - I do feel a lot better today! I already take echinacea, as you can buy it here in the UK too, but I sometimes think if your body is due for a cold, it will happen whatever you take, and best just to let it get through your system! Thanks for your response.

I personally have just gotten over a cold myself. I usually don't get them however my youngest child gave it to me this time and it was pretty bad. My cure that has worked EVERY TIME for me and for my oldest daughter as well. Get in warm clothes such as sweat shirt and sweat pants, get under at least 2 covers and sleep for as long as you can, now make sure when you go to sleep that you pull the covers over your head or it won't be as effective. When I sleep the entire day like that usually I will wake up sometime late at night just sweating so much I can't handle it any longer and that's usually when my cold is gone with it!

sorry your sick!! I hate having a cold to! I hate it everyone is like, omg, your sick! Get away from me!! ahh!! Its like, come on! I get sick all the time, I think I need vitatmines! One thing when I get a cold though, is my stomach never hurts, which is always a good thing. I hear that one or 2 grams of vitamin C really helps, and of course drink lots of water and eat a lot of chicken soup! Feel better soon!

Yes, I really hate them, especially when your head is congested, and you feel like your brain will just pop right out of your head. When you have children, you cannot stay in bed all day under the covers. Moms are just supposed to suck it up, and move on. I really do not have any natural remedies to give you. I pretty much just live with it, until it goes away.

Ohh Rosie, sorry to hear that you are suffering from sever cold. Cold is just annoying so very much. I can understand you are going through the situation. You can try this .....take some musterd oil and some garlic cloves and heat both for few minutes. Masage that oil(when it is little warm, but not totaly cool)on your neck, hand and feet. I hope after this you will feel better. This works for me. Hope you will get well soon.

You should be over it by now or only a couple of more days. Pure orange juice, chicken soup, (yes, it's true) and water. You don't need anything else, your body cannot hanle anything else and needs this stuff. You probably don't feel like much else either. Eat this stuff anyway...OK?!

Sorry mate, I sounded a bit gruff as I read my post. Not intentional, trying to help . I'm actually in a lot of pain. The chappy posting above me, Wolfie, if I remember had a pretty good idea too....though I would put some Eucalyptus on a hanky and inhale as required through my nose or rub some Vicks mentholated rub on my chest and go to bed. Give yourself rest and a chance to get better. Some soothing, relaxing background music should send you off to sleep nicely and you shall dream peaceful happy thoughts.

I have been truly blesed this winter that I haven't got the flu or a cold or a sinus infection. It seems every year for the last 14 years I have got something. I quit walmart this past November so maybe it's because of that. I really can't tell you what to take to get rid of your cold now that you have one but I can tell you how to help prevent one. I know walmart sells them, the little vitamin c candy. They are over there with the cough drops. I eat them ever day just because I like them. And if you are on a diet there is sugar free, I do believe. Also try buying you a bottle of Ester C and take one every day. Another thing that I think that might of help me is that I wear long sleeves in the winter and when I have to open a door I used the end of my shirt. Especially when I have to go in a restroom. Also make sure you wash your hands ever time you get a chance or keep germ x close by ya. And last but not least don't stand too close to people and don't kiss your hunny if they have a cold.

Me too! Mine started last Wednesday (21 March) and here I am still with it. It's got to be worse now, sneezing constantly - my nose is sore, my chest hurts every time I cough.. If you can do it, an excellent remedy if you get too stuffed up, is to slowly chew a clove of garlic (raw) - it will burn like hell, but it will certainly clear your head! Another remedy if you have a juicer, is to juice one apple, one slice of ginger-root and a clove of garlic. Drink it slowly allow the fumes to penetrate the airways.. I don't think anything will cure the cold, but it can be made more comfortable. It's the first cold I've had for 2 years - I eat plenty of garlic and use breath fresheners and deodorant to counteract garlic smells. Apparently, the human is the only animal that eats garlic every other species avoid it. So you will probably chase any germs around your bod!:-)
