Ok I decided that it was time I am going to try buying healthier foods for me and my family, so off I went to the local market. And boy was I shocked by what had happened. After I got the things that they say are healthier and better for you and got up to the checkout. My bill was almost double for the same amount of products that I would otherwise have purchase. What is the deal with this. They want you to eat healthier they complain and beg you to eat better yet to buy better and eat better you almost need the third job to even think about it..why is health food so much higher than the regular food?

Actually, I buy more natural foods. Not organic, but I avoid processed foods, and it ends up costing me less than if I bought packaged foods or junk food.
Which items were you buying, just out of curiosity? Sometimes some foods are more expensive at different times of the year depending on the weather, etc.

Like responder number one says, Most people don't eat healthy. Thats BECAUSE of the HUGE price increase in health foods! My daughter is allergic to cow's milk, so we drink soy milk instead, she also has to have soy nut butter instead of peanut butter. Soy nut butter costs $5.00 when regular peanut butter would cost me $1.98 at walmart! Its ridiculous!

The healthier products don't have the cheap fillers a lot of the cheaper products have. They really need to find a way to make the healthy foods more affordable. If you can try planting a garden and growing some of your own produce. This makes a big difference. Plus if you grow it yourself you don't have to worry about it being contaminated.

I find that keeping my family in healthy food is very expensive, but it is worth it.
I make sure my kids have fresh fruit twice a day and vegetables once a day and they have healthy snacks too like fruit bars, fruit puree, carrot sticks, salads etc.
I know it is more expensive, but think of the benefits to your children in years to come.
They will be thin, fit, healthy adults instead of overweight ones with no energy.

Have you tried hitting up a local farmer's market? They often have cheaper prices for organic produce and fresh meats. There may also be a co-op in your area, where you can pay a fee to get fresh vegetables and fruits delivered to you from several farms.
Part of the reason why health food is more expensive is because they use higher quality ingredients, which cost more. Another reason is that they use fewer preservatives, so to offset the cost of a product that must be immediately consumed or discarded, they charge you (the consumer) more.
Also, animal products that are not organic often have hormones in them. These hormones are given to the animal in an attempt to force it to be unnaturally large. Have you ever seen a real wild turkey? They are the size of a grocery store chicken! The ones we have in the grocery store are so pumped up with hormones that they look like they're on steriods! Organic milk is also more expensive because they have to use more cows to get the same amount of milk that one hormone-laden cow would normally produce.

I have the same problem! When I started weight watchers, I had to buy healther food, so I did, and my bills was HUGE. Ushally my bill weekly was about 100$, this time it was over 200$! I know produce costs a lot of money, which is understandable..but everything else I just dont understand. Most people dont eat healthy, so mabye thats why its so expensive? Im really not sure, it boggles my mind to! Good luck on eating healthier though! Im right with ya!

It might be like that in your country, not in my country, that is, Pakistan. For example, vegetables, which are described as very healthy food, cost little relatively to red meat, and in India, it is even cheaper. Whereas in countries like America, I hear green vegetables are really expensive, so it all depends on whether that healthy food is growing within your country or being imported mostly. In my country, vegetables and fruits are widely grown.

I really don't think it is that expensive. Healthy foods are more natural and homemade, with less or almost no chemicals combined. And to think and when we say homemade, we normally cook this food at home, which makes it even safer to eat and cheaper. And I don't get what you mean by regular food, how do you categorize it? For me healthier natural food are cheaper, and it all depends on how you understand it.

I do not get your point. Are natural foods more expensive in your country? That's a pity. Here in the Philippines, the natural foods are much cheaper than the processed ones. Fresh pork, beef and fish from the public market are much cheaper when compared to the processed foods which are being offered by the food companies at the supermarkets or the malls. The same goes for fresh fruits and vegetables. And all these are health foods, of course.

It's the same in Canada. Take salad packs for example. The same size for a organic pack costs almost $8.00, double the price for the regular non organic variety. Believe or not, the non-organic wilts and browns quicker after it is open. Now with the gas prices going up, we are being persuaded to buy non organic because it is cheaper.

Unfortunatly it is the same no matter where you go these days! I too find going for the healthier option makes my shopping bill much more expensive than normal.
Although I sometimes get to go to a local Farmers market and things are a bit more reasonable for the fresh, and I think a better quality too. I get as much as I can carry, then get it home and freeze it so I have some fresh in without it going off before I get the chance to use it all up!
Wish there was something in place to regulate the prices on the fresh produce that we get in the supermarkets People would buy them more regularly

Freezing fresh produce is a great idea! I tried canning tomatoes and pickles last year and they turned out pretty good as well.

I can relate to both who find healthy foods expensive and inexpensive. It depends where you buy you health foods. I do agree that it can get pretty expensive, like Healthy Options. Though there are some products that are cheaper here in the Philippines like fruits and vegetables. But products like veggie meat and soy products aren't cheap. Reason being is because these products are mostly imported. Imported products tend to have taxes added to already hig prices. The high prices of these health products are also caused by the companies that sell or import them. Because healthy living is such a rage that they make a business out of it. That's probably why they're more expensive. This is why i'm so glad that seafoods, veggies and some friuts aren't too pricey in my country. I don't worry about meat products because i don't eat pork. Still i love to get some products from Healthy Options. I just don't go there too often.

That depends on what you call health food, yes the truely healthy is more expensive. Take organic food for example, to create organic foods, and not use pesticides and all the other things needed to qualify. They have to use a completely different process, can not produce as much, or use the same equipment, and yes it costs substantally more money. On the other hand take oatmeal for example. Upon comparison me and the wife, see picture, where looking at weight control oatmeal, by a major brand. When we read the label, to decide for ourselves if that or the basic store brand oatmeal was healthier, we came to the conclusion that the store brand was cheaper. My point is, look at the facts, not just the headline. Yes certain headline healthy items cost a lot more, but are they really better, that is the question.

Hello dear, well I would like to say that anything better has to be costly. You are getting a better ,probably the best stuff available, which is pure and you want that for almost same rate at which you get the contaminated/hybrid or cheap quality food. Even good quality food-stuffs are more costly so the manufacturers spend more in order to give us possibly the best thing. Also they do take care of hygine in it, which otherwise is avoided.
So charging more is in a way appropriate according to me.

Yes I know this is so very true. I too want to eat healthier. I have three children and I want them to eat healthier too. But I too, have tried buying healthier foods but I simply can not afford it. My husband and I live from check to check each week with nothing in our savings. We have to buy, simply whatever will feed us for the week and is cheap. Sadly enough, healthy foods are not included in the cheap category. It certainly doesn't make any sense at all considering that the government is trying to seem as if they are all so worried about how they want us to all be healthier. Thanks for the post. Have a great day/night.

That has always been one of my Pet Peeves as well. They expect us to eat healthier, and want us to Eat healthier, and then charge so much to do so. I am Insulin Dependant Diabetic, and it would be nice if they did not charge so much to eat more Healthier than I can. You would think someone would take notice on this, and do something about it.

I guess it's business. Since almost everyone is getting fat and no one wants to be they see an opportunity to make money. Since lossing weight is not hard the more healthier you're going to eat and the more money you're going to waste.

Here in the Philippines the healthier foods are more cheaper than those which contain chemicals and preservatives. This is a very poor country and Im just glad the poor can still afford to be healthy. its better to eat healtheir food, there are so many disadvantages and side effects that could harm our bodies.
