How much sleep do you get everyday?

The National Sleep Foundation maintains that seven to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is optimal and that sufficient sleep benefits alertness, memory and problem solving, overall health, as well as reducing the risk of accidents.
Do you think this contention holds true to your current lifestyle?
There are some people who sleep not more than 5 hours every night but are still functioning well during the day. I should say, they are the exemptions to this claim by the National Sleep Foundation.:P
But for my case, I do get pretty enough sleep lately..but the thing is I sleep during the day coz am working night shifts. And I don't know exactly why I still feel a bit sleepy in the office even though I've already gotten some 9-10 hours of sleep during the day..*sigh* Maybe am just one big sleepy head.. lol

lol It could happen when you are a shallow sleeper .The are frequencies associated with our sleep like denoted by Alpha ,beta, theta etc. When you are in an alpha frequency state you are deep in sleep and a knock on your door or a booklet that slips to the ground won't wake you up.If you are a shallow sleeper ,then even if you are sleeping for 7-8 hours ,it might not be enough and you might be feeling sleepy for that reason.I sleep around 5-6 hours ,but sometimes I get to sleep only 4 hours. On days I sleep less I feel less efficient and my brain processes information slowly.Once I get back and compensate the lost hours of sleep I am alert again.

I think that some people need more sleep than others. If I have a good quality sleep and haven't been woken up then I need less.
I usually have nearer to 7 hours than 9 but do have the odd day or two when I need to catch up.
Have you considered that it might be something else making you feel sleepy?
I find that sometimes I feel sleepy when I need to eat something rather than because I'm actually tired. This also works the other way round for me too as sometimes I eat when I'm tired.

you have a point there, michelledarcy..these could probably be because of what I have eaten..thanks for your thoughts.. :P

I wish I was able to get 7-9 hours a night, that would be awesome. Between working and night school, there really isn't much time for this concept you refer to as sleep. I take short naps when I have some opening just to re-energize myself, but that's about it.
I still do okay with that amount of rest, but I guess it would be nice for more.

On average I get aroun 7-8 hours of sleep-- Anything less and I feel it- I'm tired throughout the day- I get real sleepy right before lunch at work- and then I drink Coke to energize me- I also feel real sluggish after lunch- the feeling you get when you've eaten too much- So yes I agree-- I think everyone knows how much sleep they need to function. I work with a lady (she's in her 50's) and on average she gets 4 hours a night- And she functions fine-! This would not work for me!

When I was working on a regular day shift schedule, I used to enjoy a good sleep to about 6-7 hours every night. But when we had our schedule rotation, and me having the 3rd shift which is from 10pm - 6am, I could hardly get a straight sleep like the one I would get when I sleep during the night. That is because my mom still wakes me up for lunch, and I find it hard to go back to sleep after lunch..so that's taking away a couple of hours from the entire sleep that am supposed to be getting. But I managed to adopt to it though and am doing fine with it now.

You still feel sleepy because your body is not designed to operate on this shift. It does know the difference. I do not get enough sleep. I do not remember when I did get enough sleep. I feel stressed a lot, and I cannot lose weight. I get six hours most nights, and mostly it is because of myLot. Oh, well.

I get a full 8 hours sleep or sometimes even more everyday ;) I stay at home and hubby leaves to work at around 7:30, that's too early for me so I get back to bed..hehe! You could be feeling sleepy because your body clock is not used to the night shifts yet Rexy..working night shifts on a long term basis is more harm to the body than good.

I like to get about 8 hours sleep at night, but I don't often get it. More likely I get about 7 hours.
On tuesday mornings I have to get up at 5.00am to taky daughter to swimming training, and no matter how much earlier I go to bed the previous night, I can't fall asleep & make up for the early start.
Teenagers are suppoosed to get about 9 1/4 hours sleep, due to their rapidly growing bodies.

for me it's fine to stay up late but gave yourself enough time to recover from it. like spending more time in the day so when the night comes your too exhausted to stay up. nothing beats the normal time that a person would sleep. it would not compensate if you have slept 10 hours during the day. duh it's still not the time for sleeping....

Hey Rexy_leigh! I get about 6-7 hours of sleep every night, after 7 hours I can't sleep any longer. Although, when I used to work the third shift I had to sleep up to 12 hours every day. For me it doesn't feel the same to sleep during the day than during the night. I think that my body cannot really relax if I sleep during the day. May be is just me! :)

I suffer from Insomnia. I don't get much more than 2-3 hours of sleep per night. I cry sometimes because I want to sleep sooooooo badly. I have suffered from insomnia since I was 13 years old. I have tried all kinds of medications and meditations but all to know avail. It is something I deal with. I bake a lot. i also cleana nd have taken up crafts such as scrapbooking to pass the time.
