We I was growing up in the 1950's, we always had dogs. They were feed the same foods we ate. They were given the scraps from the table. They all lived long lives and they were happy and healthy. Then they invented dog food, canned and packaged and everyone started using that, they new improved brands came out because the existing brands had too many bi products and fillers. All came the third generation of food, the science diet, packed with all healthy ingredients. I feed my cats (I don't have dogs at this time) cat food, regular brands and they get table scraps too. Tell me what you feed your dogs or cats and why

I have fed my cats since they were little with store bought brands specifically Indoor Formula Friskies dry and all fillet and ground Friskies wet. The table scraps idea is not feasible for all households especially mine where a variety of health foods tons of veggies or some grease, depending on who is cooking, would not make my felines very happy. My Toshi is neither too fat nor too lean and is energetic and satisfied also because his brand of food is not changed all the time, consistency really is a key for their health and happiness. Much of the food available for human consumption is either filled with steroids, chemically processed, or sprayed with some immune system shocker that shows up in future generations as 'non-humanoid' creatures with various appendages etc....

We give our dogs Technical Natural Blend, because it's hollistic food. We think its' better, because there is no corn in that food, and all the other ones, there is corn, which only fills them up, but is not necessarily good. They also go potty less with this food, because let's face it, corn does make you go to the washroom more often!

Yes I hear you we too had animals and we feed them whatever and isn't it funny how they lived to be old animals and we didn't have vet bills either. At the moment we only have one little dog, which is all we ever have but our dog is on Medi Cal and the only reason for that is when we had the dogs shots the food was there and recommended to us and because the dog is only 4 pounds it still works out to be cheap. We feed our dog for about 20.00 every 4 months so when you think about 5.00 a month you may as well get what the vet says is good.

I feed my cat Meow Mix because it is fairly cheap and he likes it. (He really didn't like the cheapest brand, Alley Cat!) My dog has to have a special kind of dog food... I think it is called Neutrogena... because she is allergic to certain dog foods and when she was a puppy and we fed her regular dog food she always puked it up. But I must admit, I do feed them both a lot of table scraps! My dog loves everything, but her favorites are bananas, green peppers, and slices of cheese. My cat is pickier. He likes tuna fish, chicken, milk, and macaroni and cheese.

My dog gets dry food (Science Diet) most the time, and wet food on Saturday. If she eats too much wet food, she has stomach problems

I feed my dog dry kibble that has been soaked for a few minutes. He's a greyhound and they have weird bloating problems if you don't soak the food. It can be quite dangerous. I think he gets lamb and rice, or something like that, because he has to maintain a certain weight. Obesity in dogs is very dangerous, so we only feed him 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups in the evening. If we have leftover veggies, potatoes, pasta, etc. I'll put some in his dinner or breakfast, just as long as there are no onions in it (they are supposed to be bad for dogs). I never feed my dogs from the table as I hate dogs that beg. My dog just goes and lays down when we eat because he's never been given any food from the table. My sister has a cat that gets tuna juice on a weekly basis. She's always so happy on that day, lol! she laps up all the juice and then cleans herself for a long time and eventually falls asleep, totally content!

I don't think table scraps hurt. I try to feed my dog a nutritious dog food-she likes to have canned food too. But she absolutely LOVES the table scraps. I have been in the habit of cooking a burger for her along with mine at times.

I often wonder if it's just propaganda to sell the pet foods. When I was a child on the farm only rich people fed the store bought stuff. Now they say not to feed adult cats milk but we always squirted a pan of milk for the barn cats. They had milk and what they caught and we never saw rats or mice around cause the cats took care of them. Now we have too many rats and mice around cause our cats are fat and overfed.I feed my cats cat food and use traps for mice so I guess I'm a part of the problem.I guess we can not turn time back time but I know what you mean. Thanks Raydene

I have to feed my dog Purina ONE lamb and rice. It is the only dog food he will eat. He turns his nose up at the other ones and refuses to eat. He is allergic to certain human food products and I can't feed him table scraps. Which kind of makes me sad because he always wants to try to eat what we have. It always turns out not so good, he then has stomach issues for days! So, no table foods for him. I will occasionally give him a piece of bread, that is about all he can take from human food. When I was little my parents would always feed our dogs table scraps, mixed in with their dog food and they all were very healthy and happy dogs as well. Sometimes my parents didn't even bother to give them the dog food, there were plenty of scraps throughout the day.

I feed them the kibbles dog food. They seems to like it better. I guess cause it has the soft and crunchy bits. They also get table scraps, but most of the time they dont' wait for scraps. I usually eat in the living room and they are all over me wanting whatever I'm eating. I usally share with them. My husband says I've spoiled them but he does the same thing.

I agree with you my mum feeds her cats the really expensive foods though she won't buy anything else. We feed our rat on scraps from our food, but also rat food.

We had a cat when we were growing up. I fed him freshly cooked cod fish every day. It used to really stink up the house, especially if I forgot and it burned a bit on the bottom. Peter wouldn't even look at dry catfood after that. I tried the cod fish as a joke. It backfired and my mother didn't appreciate it. I have never given people food to my dogs. Well, other than cheese. Kai won't eat without it. There is just too many chemicals in our food for me to feel safe in giving it to them.
