it kind of bothers me when people name their dog or any pet for that matter something totally generic. i know sometimes there is a reason behind it but whenever i name a pet i try to do something at least a little creative.

Sometimes people don't get to choose what to name their dogs. We adopt 2 of our dogs from the Humane Society. They were already named and I didn't think it would be fair for us to change their names just because the were plain.

I think sometimes people don't have a say in what the dog is named, especially if its a resuce or surrender from a shelter. For example, I didn't get to name my dog because we got her from the humane society, and she was already named. However, we did like her name as it wasn't too common, its Dharma. I really don't care if someone names their dog something generic. To me its the same as someone naming thier kid something generic, like Joe. It happens, and I wouldn't criticize their decision as they probably have a reason for it.

I am sooooo with you on that one! When we chose our long awaited Beagle, we spent almost the whole 4 weeks until we could pick her up, trying to come up with just the right name for her. She symbolised so much in our life. We'd had a few rough years, and she was going to lift our lives so much, so we wanted to name her something to do with gifts, or happiness, or joy. She was also a combined 40th birthday present for both my husband and I. I went to foreign language sites, baby name sites, anagrams, we tried everything. We had it narrowed down to about 4, but then my husband came up with the perfect name, Shebuh. It stands for SHE-Brings-Us-Happiness and it is said the same way as Sheba. She also has a middle name, as we also had another top name - Odette - which means 'Happy Home'. We are planning to get another Beagle soon, a male, and we already have his name chosen. His name comes from a weird dream I had early in our marriage, when I woke up my husband asking him if he was Orson. It became a bit of a running joke with us. So our male will be named Orson!

although it sounds a bit rubbish and unimaginative, Fido is a good name for a dog, in meaning at least. Latin for I am Faithful. but it sounds a bit naff. but really, people need to get past thinking that a dog needs to have a "dogs name" my mum used to know a greyhound who was called Nigel. hehe. my dogs are Finbarr, Saffi and Lola

you see, while it lacks imagination, Fido is actually a very good name for a dog. it is latin for I am faithful. but it sounds rubbish and unimaginative, all the same. really, people shouldn't be thinking, okay, I need to think of a dogs name for my dog. a name is a name.
