I have never heard of durian. What is it, describe it please. Where does it come from? Is it cookd or eaten raw? Is it a fruit or fish or what? How would you get rid of the smell if it smells bad?

Durian [jackfruit in English] is a fruit native to South East Asian nations like the Philippines and Indonesia. The term 'durian' is Tagalog [Filipino]. It tastes creamy - a feature not common to all fruits. It looks a little spooky because it's big and it's got hard spikes that would be harmful if hit to someone. In fact, some durian farms display boards which say: "Beware, durian fruits might be falling..." Hope I gave all the info you need...

Me! I love durian and I think it's the king of fruits. I used to loathe it back in the Philippines but when I came to Thailand I began to love it. It took me actually one year before I finally learned to eat and love durian. I started with durian chips and my! It tastes like heaven indeed! When I got used to the taste of the chips, I tried the fresh one and I told myself, "My, I didn't know what I have been missing!" Now, I'm a sucker of durian. I'm glad it's very cheap here in Thailand.

It is indeed a fruit that 'smells like hell but tastes like heaven', because this is what I usually put in every of my responses whenever I see a discussion about durian. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, I have been marked as best response to the very first discussion that I've come across talking about durian. Durian, if I'm not mistaking, has originated in Indonesia. This fruit comes from a tree called "Duri", this fruit only grows on tropical places.

I love eating durians and I simply love the taste and smell of it. The smell is really pungent and overpowering, and if I leave it in the refrigerator the whole fridge will have the smell. I love eating durians when they are cold and I love desserts where durian is one of its ingredients or topppings:) However, I have to restrain myself from eating too much durians for it is a 'heaty'fruit.

I have always like durians until a time when there was simply too much supply. My office colleagues was practically eating it everyday and the office smells. I began to develop some sort of 'allergy' as whenever I smell durian, I will get headache. I stopped eating durians since. I agree durians are nice to the tastebuds. One caution, eating too much is not good for health - high sugar and high cholestrol.

That adage about durian [jackfruit] is really very popular among all of us Filipinos because we really do appreciate such a tasty though smelly gift of nature. I personally love durian too but I am now depriving myself because they say it's a little dangerous to eat lots of it. I guess that's because durian contains saturated fat and that doesnt help us.. My sister used to hate it because of its smell but once she started eating it, she never stopped.. Guess that event led to a new adage: "Dont judge the fruit by its smell..." [LOL]

i dont think durian has a hellish smell. as many people who've had durian in their hands, they could describe the smell as pungent or a little too strong. i think it would depend on the person's sense of smell how they'd describe the way durian fruit smells like. but anyway it smells, i agree that it taste good.

yes, You know it very well because you are living in Durian city right? Wish you could package Durian and shared it to your friends abroad... lol.. Yes, I agree with you. The first time I tasted the fruit, I feel like vomiting, but the second time I had it? oh!! I started to like it. It tastes really good.

I haven't eat the actual fruit, but I've had it mixed in with bean cakes. I really like the ones in the bean cakes. I don't know if it's the same Durian, though, because I think they have a type of flour in China called Durian wheat flour. I'll have to check it out. I've seen the fruit around, but I haven't actually bought or eaten any like that.

To Indonesian, as well as to many other Asians, the stink is a welcome odor for they regard durian as the king of fruits, a delicacy that is well worth the comparatively high price it commands. Some visitors, on the other hand, are deterred by the potent smell and never actually sample the creamy golden flesh hidden within the spiny exterior - thereby missing one of the truly great pleasures of fruit eating. "The more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop," Just a few thoughts about durians: they are a sort of large melon with the most delicious taste imaginable. Unfortunately, as the melon is cut, it emits a rather strong aroma. the feature is the durian, with its exquisite taste and foul smell.

I have to agree with you that the stinking odour is a welcome one to many Asians. Considering the high price is really not going to stop many from buying it. My whole family love durians. Including my 3 year old. We even went to a durian orchard for our last holiday. - Lyn

when i was a kid, my parents would always force me to try durian. never tried it. hated the smell and never trusted it's looks. then one day, i took the plunge and tried it and surprisingly, i liked it! heck, i loved it! i prefer it over jackfruit. durian is said to smell like hell, but it doesn't smell that bad when you eat it yourself. a korean friend told me she thought it was spoiled bread. probably because of how it smells and looks. another korean friend actually liked it after trying it. i guess some things might surprise us. looks can be deceiving. no harm in trying new things!

Same sentiments here. I love to eat durian. I don't think it smell foul. Compare to smelly tofu in hongkong, durians smell and taste good. Smelly tofu smell bad but taste good. I love to eat durians from thailand because I like yellow meat.
