The South Has the Sniffles From Pollen.... and it is terrible. Beautiful weather and yet a lot of us can't enjoy it. I had never had allergies before until the past month at first I thought I had caught a cold but it is the pollen Any one got any home remedies they can share? PLEASE!!
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A yellow haze of pollen descended on the Southeast in the past week, coating cars and porch furniture and making people miserable in one of the worst allergy seasons in years. Doctors are telling people with stuffed-up noses and itchy, watery eyes to spend more time indoors if they can.
A lack of rain is blamed for the high pollen count. Rain scrubs pollen from the air.
The yellow dust - which is coming mostly from pine trees - is proving to be a gold mine for car washes, even though some are offering free repeat washes for cars that get covered again within 48 hours.
Atlanta has had only four rainy days this month. Most of the rain Columbia has gotten came during the first part of the month, before the pollen arrived.
Experts recommended allergy sufferers keep their outdoor activities to a minimum in the early morning, when pollen is at its worst.
And though it may be tempting, Hutto said people should not hose off porches or cars."Washing the pollen off could cause it to become airborne, and you could have more exposure," she said. "Even if you hose off your porch or car, it's just going to come back."http://story.news.ask.com//article/20070328/D8O4TR580.html

I am really no help there since I am staying in Singapore. If I was in your situation, I would wash off those pollen from my body, then shield my body by wearing more clothings. I would want to keep myself covered as totally as possible since prevention is better than cure. I would also see a doctor to get rid of the existing problem. :/

Thanks I think I will end up having to see the doctor as they are not forecasting any rain for another week:-)

This sounds even worse than oyur situation with pllen & dust causing many allergy problems.
I am allergic to mould.
But anyway, I doubt whether I can offer any more advice than what yoiu already have tried. But this is what I have tried:
1.Use a vaporiser in your bedroom at night. This helps clear your nose and thus, assists breathing.
2. Try the preventative medication. This is not a home remedy, but I find prevention better than the actuual atttempt to cure.
3.Stand in the bathroom with a steamy hot shower running. This will help clear your nose also.
4. Try eucalptus in your vaporiser, or in a bowl of water, with a towel over your head. Eucalptus is natural, & highly thought in Australia.
Good Luck.

Oh you poor poor thing. I have allergies, but they haven't really hit yet. I remember living in Indiana, where that yellow pollen would be so thick you could see it in coating the air, and it stuck to everything. I am so sorry. Try some allegra, it is about the only thing that really worked for me. I don't know of any good home remedies, other than to stay in with the window and doors shut. It can be an awful feeling though. Also, benedryl really helps you be able to get some sleep at night. I hope it gets better soon.

I am in South too and yes it is a yellow haze here. The odd thing is I am not having an allergic reaction at all. All last year I was having sinusitus every few months, but nothing this year so far. Last year was the first time ever I had this problem. I was told it was due to the fact I had quit smoking and would have the problem for about year. Well the 9th of this month was one year that I quit smoking and I haven't had any problems. I am surprised people with allergies to pollen aren't lining up the hospital rooms from all this heavy load we are enduring. We finally got rain today, the first i have seen in over a month. We have only had 1/2 inch of rain all year, usually we have 5 inches by now. I read this the worse pollen load we have had in over 50 years. Maybe april will bring the showers and cut down the pollen.

Oh I'm about to die also...It's horrible!!! It's affecting my whole family...even the dog! I've been taking benadryl by the handfuls but it doesn't seem to do a whole lot of good. I'll be keeping an eye on the discussion to see if anyone comes up with anything good for a remedy :-) Get well soon!

You described my situation exactly. We need some rain down here in South FL really bad. My husband and I are still working, so we have to go outside and get in the cars and drive to work. My son in the Atlanta area told me how bad it's been there, and we always stay away from there in April and May. Of course, since our oldest granddaughter is getting married on June 9, we'll be headed up there for that. Both of us are on certain medications, and we can't just run out and get OTC allergy relief pills to take care of all the sniffles and such. It's a real pain at some times. C'mon rain!!!

You can purchase over the counter allergy meds. Ask the pharmist the best one for your symptoms, and what meds you are on. Some interact. I like to use benadriyl, but again, if you are on meds, be cafeful.

I do not have any home remedies or information about pollen and allergies, but I do have a question. Why is it that in todays times more and more people seem to be suffering from allergies??What has changed in the last 50 years that has created millions of people to become allergic to things(anything, for that matter)? What are we doing different?

Gee, I don't know what to tell you to do. I'm the only one around here that doesn't have allergies yet. Everybody else seems to have them and the allergies are all adult onset. Nobody had them as children. Most everybody I know gets something from their doctor every Spring. There just must be some kind of super pollen out there and I suppose I'll get allegergies sooner or later too. So maybe I'll keep an eye on this thread and see what folks tell you works.
