I remember reading in a cookbook that cilantro and coriander were the same thing. The book said that in Mexican cooking the herb was referred to as cilantro; otherwise it is known as coriander. On a cooking show, the host said coriander was the seed tops of the cilantro plant. Does anyone know about these herbs? Thanks!

Yes you are right, the leaf part is cilantro and seeds are coriander, these two have strong flavor, we use the seed as spices along with other ingredients, the leaves are used in almost all curries, chuteny are made too, added to salsa etc.. Thank you so much for this discussion. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

as people have already mentioned, both are the same! certain cultures use one name or the other interchangeably, but in fact the seeds are the only part that are actually 'coriander'. everything else including the leaves and the stalks are 'cilantro'. both are the same plant.

I agree with the cooking show host: the parsley looking part of the plant is cilantro. It is the seed heads that are known as coriander. I thnk in non-Mexican cooking they might call the seeds coriander, and the 'cilantro'Chinese Parsley.

Okay here is the difference! Alright... The cilantro is the leaves of the plant which is the herb part of the plant. Then the corriander is the seeds of the plant which are usually grinded up like pepper!

Both indicate to same herb. In French it is termed as Coriander whereas in Spanish, it is Cilantro. It is a delicate herb with several branches belonging to carrot family. I use its leaves extensively for garnishing the salads, soups and curries. The seeds in dried form are used for important ingredients in preparing curry powder. In health point of view, it's an aid to digestive system. It stimulates the appetite and also adds in the secretion of gastro juice. The seeds are considered to have cholesterol lowering properties. coriander tea has very good effect on the digestive tract, increases appetite and relieves nausea, diarhoea, and flatulence. It is reputed to enhance circulation and relieve fluid retention.
