Ok, so mine was a small op which I had to go for today, after waiting 6 months. I had to report to the hospital at 7am in this morning. I couldn't drive home because of the anaesthetic so I couldn't use my car and had to take a taxi. I reported in at 6.45am and told I was second on the waiting list. Eventually after seeing the nurse, anaesthetist then the consultant I had my op at 10.15am I was then put on the recovery ward and was given something to eat which I couldn't eat because of what it was, I was just given a yoghurt and water. I had a splitting headache because of the anaesthetic but they wouldn't prescribe me a paracetamol because it was against their rules, I had to put up with it. They told me my blood pressure was low and because I hadn't eaten anything wanted me in overnight!!! I just wanted to get home, my head was thumping, I was bored stiff bearing in mind it was now nearly 10 hours since I was in the hospital and the nurses weren't that friendly and in the end I discharged myself because I felt very uncomfortable and basically they couldn't have cared less. It wasn't a nice ordeal at all and I'm just glad I'm home and thank god it's over. Have you had any bad experiences at going to hospital or for an op?

Awww wolfie .. what a shame you weren't treated a bit better .. normally you get a sandwich thrust at you after an op .. yoghurt is a bit odd as not all folks can eat it or like it .. I am one of those kinds of folks who sit up immediately after an op and demand a nice cup of coffee to drink on the way back to the ward .. and my last op as we got back to the ward I was just in time to have my lunch served up ... woohooo ... 30-40 minutes after having my gall bladder out I was enjoying some roast chicken and all the trimmings heheh !!!

Yes Wolfie I have I was admitted into Hospital by my Lung Consultant in November 2005 as I was in severe Pain which we thought was the Lungs but it wasn't it was my Kidneys. They admitted there and then and I am petrified of Hospitals. They done more Tests and then took me to the ward. The Nurse showed me my Bed after I had rang my Kids to let them know who started to panic and got upset as they where scared and knew how scared I am of these places. The Nurse left me, I was in so much Pain, I laid on the Bed and I was crying. It was the Lady in the bed next to me that said to the Nurse could she not see I was in Pain. The Nurse asked me if I wanted someting for the Pain well of course I did. She came back with a Tablet and I don't know why but I asked her what it was and she said Paracetemol. I asked if she has read my Records and she said well no I haven't had time, I then told her that it states in my records that I am allergic to these and that she should read before giving me anything, she got stroppy and another Nurse asked to go she then came to me and gave me Morphine as that is what I should have got anyway with the Pain I was in. My Blood pressure had dropped I had a fever and my Breathing was bad so they got concerned because of my Illness. But I took my Inhalers and the breathing after an hour went better. Wolfie I think our Hospitals are getting to careless now annd they don't care to be honest with you That one Tablet could have killed me and to this Day I still do not know why I asked what it was.

I am 56 and have never been in a hospital in my life except in emergency for the flu etc., so I was there to have my umbilical hernia operated on and was terrified! I couldn't escape the feeling of doom I was having, and when they started to put the thing over my mouth and said to count backward from 20, my heart was beating so fast I thought I was going to have a heart attack! I jumped up and they argued with me but I got my clothes and had to sign myself out and release them of all responsability, and I left! I just couldn't go through with it! At the time my hernia was bulging out of my belly button and it was the size of a plum, well that was 5 years ago and it is the size of a grapefruit now, but I still am not ready to go back! I know all about the risks of living with a hernia like that but I will take my chances!

Despite the many scares you read about hospitals, there are some people who have good experiences there and get the services they need to stay well. I think you should have your hernia surgery. The longer you wait, the worse it will get. They can give you some medication before they put the mask over your face --just explain your nervousness to your doctor.

I had a big op about 10 years ago1 It happened because i pulled 2 discs out of my neck giving birth although they couldn't decide for 2 years what was the matter with me i was in constant pain even moving a finger hurt. I was told before my op the worst scenario was i would die the second worst scenario was i had a 50% chance of being in a wheelchair for the rest of my life added to that i would be hospitalised for maybe a month i proved them wrong and was out in 10 days lol It took me almost year to be able to do everything i wanted to and it was a horrible time for me a new baby and a toddler to care for but i got my life back and count my blessings everyday!

First of all have a Speedy Recovery and hope you are feeling better. I feel bad you had to go to the Hospital alone and have Surgery alone. If I lived near you I would have driven you to the Hospital. Ok my OPERATION experience was not nice. I needed knee surgery and it was horrible. I was the first case and they took me in and my problem came right before the operation. I was a little nervous but still fine I was talking to the nurses and I even slid over to the operating table. They started to give me some anaesthetic because I started feeling sleepy. All of a sudden I had the crash cart next to me they were pushing the respirator down my throat and the Doctors were yelling at me asking me why I did not tell them I had a heart condition because I was going into Cardiac Arrest. The Surgery was scrubbed and had to be postponed I was admitted to the hospital for heart tests. After all of that they found out that some of the anaesthetic they gave me must have been something I was alergic to. So I was annoyed and I did not want the Surgery when they scheduled it but I had to go through with it and everything went fine. I was just scared because when I think back they could have killed me with the anaesthetic.

The only time I had an operation was when I was 9 . I had my tonsils removed. I don't remember much about except that I kept throwing up afterwords. I have a very touchy tummy and if it gets empty and I get some kind of pain killer in me. I get very sick. It was very hard for me because After the operation I couldn't eat much. But I made it through and a few weeks after my dad snuck me a piece of steak because my mom was too afraid to let me eat solid food. I really wanted some steak lol. But thats the only time I was in the hospital for an operation. Although I did have my sons in a hospital. But thats a whole different story lol. I'm glad your back and doing ok Wolfie. I missed you.

I've had 5 operations ... 3 c-sections and 2 gall bladder removal (yes, it took two). The worst one was my last c-section - they didn't give me enough anaestia and I could feel them cutting into me! The bad part was that they gave me just enough anaestia that I couldn't scream! I finally got my husband's attention (it was a spinal) and he was able to tell the anaestheologist that I needed more. He was in no real hurry to help me out and i just remember the tears running down my face. I actually thought, just knock me out this pain is too much ... besides, I've already had two other babies! I love my son very much, but I try not to think of tht day very often!

A few years ago,I was in hospital for about a couple of months when my younger one was born. Throughout the second pregnancy,my condition was quite delicate but I wanted the baby. I had to be operated upon finally. It was an ordeal for my family (specially for my little daughter whose day started and ended with me),as our condition was critical for few weeks.(some internal complications). This whole ordeal ended on a happy note when our family re-united and it sure was a happy homecoming.

I had a hysterectomy several years ago that went bad. I had fibroids which had grown so large that my uterus ws the size of a bowling ball when they took it out. I was also unable to eat solid foods cause my intestines shut down for 4 days you talk about throwing up! I threw up for 45 minutes solid at one point. They had to put a tube up my nose and down my throat into my stomach to keep me from getting nauseous. Then after that was cleared up I got an infection in my incision and wound up with an open wound for about 6 weeks that had to be dressed at the hospital on a daily basis. I live 45 minutes from the hospital. Finally after 6 weeks of the openwound they stitched it up. I had 4 operations total in 2 months to handle all that. It took 4 months for me to heal completely from a hysterectomy. Hysterectomies usually take about 30 days to heal when they are normal ones.

well it may be funny to some but i got admitted for circumsizing!!!! i was admitted the day before. on the day of the operation, i was cleaned up, you know,,,,and given a robe to wear. then i was given a sedative injection which made me dizzy..i remeber the part when i was taken on a strecher to the operatiog ward. the doctors and nurses were all wearing face masks and the doctors were talking about some cookery show!!!! i was amazed to hear them but later after the op i realized they were trying to calm me..one of the nused then put a needle in my arm. i remeber blood coming in the tube of the needle. the anesthetic inserting a injection and pumping the fluid..and as the blood receeded back with the fluid..blank...zap i was unconscious. the op took just about half an hour..i was taken to the recovery ward..i remember when i woke up the first time my father was with me...but i was so dizzy, i again fell unconscious. after a while i again got up...i could see 4 fans on the ceiling instead of one..!!!!! and boy was the first time pissing painful.....it burnt so bad, i was screaming...i was so angry...same goes for the everyday dressing and dandage change...the compounder virtually ripped the bandages off my organ..!! god was that tough..!!!!!!

When I had surgery I was 16 and was in the hospital for a month everyone was really nice to me, I think mostly because I was young and they felt bad for me. But my father had a heart attack and filled up with fluid and was in the hospital for a few weeks last year. He actually feared for his life, not from his illness but from the nurses. The only "nurse" that cared was the janitor. They would leave his medication laying around and not giving it to him. They did not even give him a bath my mother had to do it everyday. One day they left him on the toilet for over an hour before my mother got there and put him back to bed. What makes this worse is that my mother works for the hospital that he was in! She finally conplained to the director of nursing and several nurses were "reassigned." I thin that this is a lawsuit waiting to happen and my mother did eventually take her case to the board. Will this change? I doubt it.

It is not just the hospitals here in the UK that I have a problem with. It is also the MD's. Doctors just don't listen to you. I broke a bone in my foot in 2002. I complainted for years and years. It took until 2006 to get my doctor to send me to a specialist. Then I got stuck on the forever famous waiting list. It took almost a year to have surgery. I really hate wards. I haven't been in a ward since I was 6. They have you come in by 3pm, don't ask you what you want to eat. So you get stuck with something that you would never eat no matter how hungry you are. So, no dinner for me. The following day was my surgery. That went ok, as far as I can remember. When I was brought back up to the ward I started running into problems. I had a reaction to the anaesthetic they gave me. I was sick as a dog for the next 10 hours. The nurses went right by my bed and made sure everyone else was ok. I may not sound like a local but I am a UK citizen. There is nothing like being sick all over the place. Push the call button and it took 10 minutes for anyone to see what I wanted. Not a happy person. That night my foot started bleeding. Pushed the button and it took 30 minutes for anyone to show up. The nurse cleaned it up and left. I was never asked what I wanted for my meals, but everyone else was. The nurses just ignored me. I kept asking when I could go home and they wouldn't give me an answer. I had to get used to using crutches. Upon discharge, I was given no instructions. No one told me how long I would be on crutches, they gave me no pain meds, they gave me no instructions on the care of my cast. It was more like don't let the door hit you on the way out. The medical industry here is the pits. I have no faith in them whatsoever. I had no after care at all. It made it more difficult when I was home alone all day long with no help. Glad you are home. How are you feeling now?

Well first I am glad the operation was successful, and you are home. Secondly, I have to say I have had lots of surgery in my time, and never had a bad exerience - touch wood! Sadly, I guess that might have a lot to do with good old BUPA and private medicine - it is sad but true that the conditions, and the ratio of Nurses to patients are much better there and you get better treatment. My only real bad experience" is the fact that I have a total phobia of anaesthetics, which means when I go down to theatre I am usually petrified, but they can't give me "pre-meds" as I have an allergy to them!! I remember last time I went for an operation, I was shaking so much, and the Nurses laughed afterwards that my last words going under were "Tell Eduardo I love him" because I was convinced I was never coming round!!! But apart from that - i've been fine. Get well soon!

I had part of my cervix removed and woke up during the operation, then when i had my full hystorectomy I woke up again and had a seizure on the table. It's very scary to wake up during an operation, as for the aftermath they gave me morphine in my iv and had to give me benadryl right after my arm started itching so bad I was clawing the skin off of it. The hospital was pretty good they took ok care of me and sent me home rather quickly.

I'm lucky coz i havent gone in to an oeprationa nd I'm always praying that it operation wont come in my life. Although I had a worst experience with my wife having an operation on appendicitis and ectopic pregnancy. The feeling is really worst, I can't do anything to help. All I did was wait and pray.. hope, it doesnt happen to anybody.

i had 2 ceasarian operation and i tell you it's tough. i call it "ordeal" that you have to go through. when i had my daughter i asked the my dr not to put me to sleep because i wanted to see my baby when she comes out and didn't wanna sleep because i was afraid i won't wake up. i didnt know what i was thinking then but it was an ordeal t go through that operation half awake. it too them longer to finish the stitches because i gained weight and it was harder to stitch back the cut. i don't know if i can go through that again. i still want to have another a child but just thinking of the operation gives me 2nd thoughts.

Hi, my experience goes like this... I have a lump in my left part of my br*ast (sorry mature content is not allowed, so i shade out the word), so to ensure if the lump is cancerous or not, doctor advised that it is better to remove it and diagnose it. Operation was planned 7 days later. It was a working day, so my mate drove me to the hospital in early 7am to get ready for the 10am operation. He gotta run to work at 7.30am. So I was left alone in the hospital. This is my first time going to the operation table. I am indeed nervous on what is going to happen. I am really glad that there is a very sweet and friendly nurse with me before the operation starts. She looks like she is in her 20's, wearing a tidy light green uniform and she wore her hair up in a bun. She sounds like an angel to me. After directing me to my ward, she asked me not to worry and explain what is going to happen before and after operation. And lump removal is indeep a minor operation that I shouldn't worry about. So I was alone in the room for awhile. Later, she asked me to get changed to the operation dress and ased me to go on a wheel chair. Although I said I could walk on my own, but she insists that this is the procedure. Lying on the cold operation table make me feel so helpless. MY life is in my surgeon's hand. They are going to cut my body, take whatever they want and sew back the opening. Once lights on, anaesthetist came and give me the injections, then i felt sleepy. When someone called me up, it was one and a half hour later. Two weeks later, my doctor told me that the lump is not cancerous.;p
