i haven't had one while pregnant...but i would think that a doctor would not give her pills to take that would harm her baby. my sister was on a pill for heartburn that the doctors gave her while she was pregnant

Never take antibiotics without a doctor's prescription whether a person is pregnant or not. I strongly suggest for your friend to see her OB-Gyne first before taking any medication, I had urinary track infection when I was in high school and my doctor advised me to drink lots of coconut juice. If ever coconut juice is available in your area, tell your friend to drink this because it really helps with fludhing out the toxins that causes uti. Take care!

I had a UTI with my last pregnancy and had to take antibiotics. There was no other way to clear up the infection. There was no effect on the baby except when it came to nursing. The antibiotics broke down her ability to fight yeast infection and she ended up getting thrush. After the third episode with the thrush I had to give up nursing and feed her with a bottle.

I had a UTI when I was pregnant with my first son. I don't recall my doctor telling me any possible risks in taking the antibiotics, just that I needed to take them as it needed to be cleared up before my son was born. So, not questioning my doctor, I took them. My son was born right on schedule and with no known problems. A few years later he was diagnosed with an autism disorder and severe mental retardation (gosh, I hate that word!). Should I blame the antibiotics for this? No, as there were other factors that were involved not only with my pregnancy but after my son was born. Feel free to email me if you want to know more.
If your friend is worried, she should consult her doctor about this.

I had UTI's with both of my previous pregnancies and again have another one in this pregnancy. I went on to deliver very healthy little girls and your friend needs to not worry so much. Tell her to just take her medicine, drink lots of water and unsweetened cranberry juice and her infection will go away and her and her baby will be fine.
