I don't know what this means but I don't have virus protection as I cannot afford it and I am concerned because I followed a blog thread about Harry Potter and ended up in a discussion about Hermoinie Granger's role in 7th book and when I closed the window all the sudden windows started popping up really fast, over and over so I hit ctrl, alt, delete and it stopped and I started closing windows. I had to close 58 windows, what does this mean? Have I been infected? Afterward when I hit my Internet Explorer button to come here again it was a page about critical updates. I closed it and hit Internet Explorer again and it brought me back here again which is my homepage. Do I have reason to be concerned? What should I do?

Well, that could be any number of things, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're infected. Something I would suggest for you is to download and run SpyBot Search and Destroy. It's a free program and it'll take care of a lot of trojans, spyware, etc that might find it's way into your pc. You can find it here: http://www.safer-networking.org/

I have spywaredoctor but I u sually shut it off as my computer is so slow I shut off as much stuff as I can. Anyhow, rather than download a new program that does something I already have a program for, I did a scan with the spywaredoctor and it did come up with a high risk thing called CommonWord or something like that, it says it allows one word searches, and it gave the address where it was located on my computer so I tried to remove it myself but my computer seach says there is no such file so I don't know if it is making it up or what but a lot of places offer free scans but once they find something they want money to remove what they find and I don't have money. The only one I know that removes the stuff free is windows Live One care but last time I used it my yahoo was all messed up and had to be completely erased and reinstalled. What I am asking is if I download one of these programs mentioned here, and it finds things, will it remove what it finds for free? If not, there is no point. I can't do it. I lost my job over a year ago and I don't make enough money at writing yet to afford anything.

Hi Tonya. I don't want to say not to be concerned because there's so much out there in the internet world. First off, I would like to tell you though that this has happened to me too. I told my father-in-law about it and he told me it's nothing. I actually had this happen to me when I was on a myspace comment website. I thought for sure I was infected. My father-in-law who works on computers often says that they are just popups. Sometimes you reach sites that have so many pop ups that pop up blockers can't find them. Yet, here's a website for a free virus scan if you want to make sure http://housecall.trendmicro.com. I found this website through an online class I had. The teacher requested that we do the virus check before submitting papers. I hope this works for you.

Bungirl is correct, try the web address she gave you. You can also do a free spyware/adware/virus scan at http://www.trendmicro.com. I don't know what your virus protection is, but maybe it is time to update it. I'm not sure what happened but it sounds like a adware program somewhere embedded in the blog. Sorry this happened to you. You should be fine once your run the scans and take the appropriate action.

Download the free antivirus from AVG free.grisoft.com/ and run a virus scan. Then download the free software from adaware from www.lavasoftusa.com/ These two will get rid of most of the nasties on your computer.
