When the Lights go out

an oil lamp - Oil lamps come in so many shapes and sizes. I find these little finger lamps (they have the ring to put your finger through) come in quite handy for traveling from room to room in the dark. Most of mine are glass, but I do have a couple metal ones like this...I use the glass most often.

When you lose the power in your home, and it is evening time - what do you do? do you use flashlights, candles, lanterns? do you play games? We usually light a candle in each room that we will be walking through such as the kitchen, livingroom, bathroom. I have a collection of Oil Lamps so we light a few of those in the main rooms we are in, and also carry the finger lamps to the bathroom when we need to be in there. I have one hanging lantern that I put on a swiveling plant hook at the end of the hallway. I think it is fun to play hide-n-seek in the pitch dark. My husband thinks it is fun to go to sleep, hehe. We usually will pray our rosary if we hadn't yet done so.

I have several oil lamps that I use and I love candles so one goes in each room we are in, and another in the bathroom. the worse thing is we also have no water because we have a well and it is pumped with electricity. I would get caught up on my reading or play games with my family. If it was off for long I would Freak out! I need water and the other necessities.

we have the same situation with the water pump and well. I guess it is a good practice to have a few gallons set up for such an occasion. Maybe a 5 gallon bucket to flush the toilet at least once!

candle - an old fashioned yet stylish candle holder
When the lights go out and it is night time our first step will be to turn on the flashlights and look for candles. Since we have a baby in the house we have plenty of empty milk formula cans that we use to hold the candles to be on the safe side. We put the can with the candle inside in the middle of the hallway so that it can provide light in every direction without catching anything in its flames.

oh cool idea, sort of luminaries. do the cans get awful hot? Before you know it that baby will be up and about and you will no longer be able to put the candles out like that... but, still I like the idea, it must give a soft glowing ambiance.

Thankfully it doesn't happen too often but when it does we have things set up for it. We have sconces on the walls in some rooms and we'll light the candles in there for them. This is really nice in the bathroom so we don't have to carry things in there. Also with the sconces it means the cats can't knock over the candles which they have been known to do. We also have a couple of hurricane lamps and flash lights. Pretty much though once the lights go out at night we just sit out side and smoke. We talk and such but not much we do other wise. We might try and play cards or connect four but only until the kid goes to bed.

oh the sconces are a great help! I always have that fear of a candle being knocked over, or the child will play with the hot wax and spill it out. not much can go wrong when you use a sconce, huh? do they have hurricane globes over them?

Normally when there is a power failure, we would rush to find out exactly what is wrong. We will look out of our apartment to see if it is our entire floor, block or just our household. Then we will light candles and wield torches while trying to sort out the problem.

We live in a area where this happens frequently. We are well stocked with oil lamps, coleman lamps, candles and flashlights. We also keep extra batteries for the flashlights in all night stands. We are really quite used it and it does not affect our way of life for the night at all

Sounds like it is not a bummer when you lose power at your house. You are scaring me with the candles though. Be careful they can start a fire.Try flashlights instead. Be Well.

Well, if it's already dark outside, my husband and I will make the kids go to sleep! LOL As the boys need a night light on to be able to sleep well we give them each a little flashlight. Sure they usually play light games with the flashlights, but go to sleep soon after. :)

if its still early we will light the candle and talk. sometimes we will go out and find a bright place. if its already bed time, we'll just go to bed and talk with each other till we fall asleep. it's not so fun to still be awake when the power is off. it's very hot and uncomfortable. better go to sleep.

we have candles and lanterns-but i think i'm going to get some of the new chemical lanterns-they're much safer. we usually sit on the porch, listen to music, play cards or sleep. one of these years i'm going to get a generator-power goes down a lot in my area.

the power ddoesnt seem to go out as much as it use to. but i remember when we were kids we always played games and we always used flash lights. for some reason my parents thought we wouldnt make it through the night without a radio, one that was so small you couldnt even hear it and you could never get the station clear. anyway, we would run around the house scaring the crap out of each other. i remember one time i went to hide in the tub and i forgot about the pail of water my mom had drawn in case the world was ending and i steped right in it and then i fell. needless to say everyone found me. so yeah htis is my story.. mandy

when the power is off in my home,i will not hurry to look for a candle or something else for lightening. the only thing i do is to send messages using my cell phone to my friends, and wait until the power is on.if the power will go off a whole night, then i have to use a candle, and sometimes i even havent got one,so i have to go out and buy some,so it's really a trouble for me if the power is off.thank god that rarely happen now.

The lights haven't gone out at our house for years, but we usually light candles. Whenever the lights used to go out, it was in the winter (when it actually used to snow, thanks to climate change it doesn't snow here anymore) and snow piled on the powerlines... We'd always have something warm to eat like tomato soup. :)

I usually light some candles and write by candle light in my journal. It's very peaceful to me.

We have a couple oil lamps that power outages is the only time we use them, I also usually have a good supply of candles, seldom have flashlights because if we can find them they usually don't have batteries because someone (my 15 year old son) has taken the batteries for something else. Power goes out it's get the lighting set up and pull out the Scrabble game - we always play that when the power goes out.

I'm pretty lucky cause we haven't had the lights go out very often. But whenever they do, I am ready for it. I am a huge candle lover, so there are always plenty of candles in my house. I guess what would bother me the most if the power went out, is that I wouldn't be able to get online.

I kind of laughed at this question. I remember living in a very rural area, that if a swift wind blew through our community we would lose power for hours and sometimes days. I remember we had to stock up on oil lamps, candles and flashlights and batteries! So, most often we would have an oil lamp in each room, such as the kitchen, living room and one for each bedroom. We would each have a flashlight to walk down the halls to go where we needed to go. For the bathrooms we would light a candle in there when we had to go, and then put the candle out when we were done. So, I always used a combination of them. We played shadow games and made shadow puppets in the light, we would tell ghost stories, we would gather some lamps together if we wanted to play a board game, but most times we would talk about different life things that bothered us or interested us at the time.
