Caterer fired over serving suspected dog meat - What would you do?

The caterer at a dormitory on Bangladesh's Dhaka University has been fired after students complained they were served dog meat, officials said on Thursday.
Students at the Hajji Mohammad Mohsin Hall protested after a student suspected that the meat on his plate was of a "dog or fox," instead of beef or mutton.
He drew the attention of other students, who rushed to the authorities demanding an immediate investigation.
"We have seized the menu and expelled the hall caterer," said Ahmed Zaman Anwar, provost of the 1,200-student dormitory.
What would you do if this happened to you? I would be very upset and might even try and take some legal action.
This just isn't right.

I would be upset if they were serving something against my knowledge, however I don't think the caterer should be fired unless they can prove it was indeed dog or fox meat. Innocent till proved guilty. Plus I think it's the entire kitchen staff to blame as it takes more then one to run a kitchen and get the particular animal on someone's place, the caterer, the chef, and anyone else that had contact with the procedure... I sure wouldn't eat there again but don't know about legal action, not sure it would be worth it here.

You are right. The whole kitchen staff would have known about this.
Why do you say it wouldn't be worth it to take legal action.
I know if it happened here in the U.S., all hell would break loose.

It's ashame that it would be difficult to sue someone in your country. That just isn't fair.

Not every country is easy to do that. Some laces if you sue you end up loosing more then you get, especially if the owners might have the money to get what they want. To get a lawyer and so on when you don't have the money can be hard and it can be a very prolonged and exhaustive process. I don't have anything against suing, I just don't know if it would be worth it in my case. Plus sue the place not the caterer is an idea (; they should know who they are hiring.

One would think that they authorities would have had the meat analyzed before jumping to such harsh conclusions.
You're right, it isn't right.

Did you hear anything else?
I'd be interested to know if it was dog meat or just old, yucky meat.

The students definately noticed something wrong with the meat and the caterer was quickly removed. So there must be something to this issue.

Another disgusting story, I don't understand people anymore. This is why I don't travel outside of my country and my culture. You need to watch out for the food, water, health care if you get sick in another country, corrupt police officials and too many other things to worry about. I won't wander too far from my own back yard. It's just not worth it.

You are right. There are many things you have to be careful of when you travel abroad.
I'm not going to stop traveling, but I will use much caution.
Thanks.

There is a reason that dog meat is not on the menu here in the United States. People just believe it's a wrong thing to do.

This is really kind of sick and wrong on so many levels. Obviously something with the meat was definitely wrong when students were noticing something right away.
On the other hand though, I thought Dog Meat was a delicacy out there, although of course I could be wrong.
I think it's only right that the Hall Caterer was expelled. Serving up food that isn't supposed to be on the menu is grounds for immediate expulsion, and of course with students complaining he obviously did something wrong.

I wouldn't like this but a few years ago in the next town to us an Indian take away got done for serving dog and they found loads of bits of dogs in the kitchen, I live in England so this is not a rare thing unfortunately.

If they promote the meat to be beef and then serve dog I would definately take legal actions. To me, eating dog is just not right, however I do know that they do it in asian culture. I would be so grossed out though that I would probably phuke for a month!

I'd be sick longer than a month and the thought would never leave my mind.
It's so beyond the Western belief system.

In the US, it would certainly be an outrageous thing to have happen. All kinds of furor and uproar would begin! I just don't know how things are done in Bangladesh. Some countries think eating dog is acceptable. It grosses me out just to think of it!

All 'hell' would break loose if that happened here in the U.S. Just look at the outrage over the tainted pet food.
I'd become a vegetarian before eating dog meat.
No way, Jose.

What I am wondering is how this student came about suspecting the cook of serving dog meat. Sometimes the only way I can tell the difference in something is if I have had it before and know what it is I am being served. Or I am out right told what is on my plate.
If it was the taste, than it would make me wonder if in fact this student had, had it before. I have had some rather weird tasting beef cuts before, but I would never suspect the preparers of it of trying to serve me something other than a beef product. Cause I know that certain spices can totally change the taste of certain meats.

I had that same thought. How did he know it was dog meat? He must have eaten it before. I couldn't tell you what dog meat looks like.

Like someone earlier asked, I also am wondering how this student would know what dog meat tasted like.
A person would have to have some type of a frame of reference in order to make a claim like that.
So the question would be, is dog a common part of the menu there?

You might be correct. There is a reason the student knew it was dog meat.
I don't know if it's a common part of the menu though.

It's such an evil thing to do. Intentionally mislead someone as to what they are eating.
They should be fired and prosecuted.

I know in some countries they do eat dog , and in some others they eat horses , I would like to know what I am eating though , and if it were something I wasn't used to eating and the thought of it made me feel ill or sick then I would definitely report it , I am sure that when we eat out though that sometimes it is better not to know at all , xx

I can't see myself eating a dog or horse. I once saw a show on TV in France where they sliced the horse meat real thin and ate it raw.
Different strokes for different folks.

How did he suspect it. It still hasn't been proven to be true. I find it absolutely gross but I thought Asian cultures did eat dog flesh.

The fact that they seized the menu and expelled the hall caterer seems to point to the fact that this story might just be true.
I hope it isn't true though.

That is so gross.I feel sorry if a dog had to be killed.I do not understand why people would want to kill dogs and cats for their fur or thier meat but it is sad and cruel.I know some people think that we as Americans might be cruel for killing cows and pigs, ect. But dogs and cats are our best friends.I saw a You tube video of over in China where they capture animals even owners animals because they said they had collars on.They beat them and then skin them alive and they are left to die and somes heat is still beating after they die.I cried when I seen this.It on Youtube.com and I did a seach on the fur off of animals or something similar to that .I first originally seen it off of a blog.I tell you though it is very sad and disgusting to see.I am still haunted by what I sae.We live in a cruel world and if the caterer did fix dog meat I hope he gets in alot of trouble,I would have notified the Health authorities or whatever their called to come and check the meat.Becasue I am sure they might be able to tell if they did a test on the meat.

I just don't understand how people can be so cruel. I just read a article that they are going to kill over 200,000 baby fur seals in Canada.

this is very bad man, how can they do like this. if we are going to think about this we cant even eat any were outside. but this is surely a very bad thing. no one must put a dog meat to the customers who believe in the resort and come to them. they must be seriously punished so that no one else does it again.

You have to be very careful when you dine outside of the country. You never know what might be on your plate.
I'd be very angry if this ever happened to me.
