A "Permanent" Perm?

United States
April 2, 2007 2:48pm CST
When my beautician gave me a perm last week, she mentioned that she only had 2 clients who were still getting perms, and I was one of them. My hair is so straight that it just will not stay looking nice for the whole week until I go back to get it re-styled again...unless I have a perm. I made the comment that I wished there was a "permanent" perm that would last forever, so I didn't have to keep getting another one every three months. She said she'd be happy to pay for half of the cost for a "permanent" perm for me so that she didn't have to keep giving me one every three months. How do you women feel about this? Do you still get a perm? I also wish I could figure out a hair style that would be easy to take care of, that I could actually take care of myself, and only have to go to get my hair colored and highlighted every so often. I know I'm going to need to cut down on these expenses when we retire later this year, so any helpful hints would be appreciated.

I think a natural haircut would be the best thing in your life. You could use the money on meals with the hubby. I used to perm and now I am so glad that I do not any longer with those chemcials and damage that the perms do. A great haircut can be the grandest thing. Curlers for special occasions. Good luck with whatever you do.

I'm working on it. It's making up my mind on exactly what to do that's so hard. Thanks for the good luck wishes.

Hey get some of those hair scrunchies or hair pieces. They have them all over the place and you can even order them on line. I have straight hair and envy people who have even a hint of a curl or wave. It is just the pits to have straight hair. I need a perm too and have been procrastinating. So in the meantime I take my hair put it in a pony and wrap a hair scrunchies around it. Sometimes two or three of them. Good luck. I am hoping to retire in two years. I'm tired of working.

I know what you mean about retiring...I get to do that later this year...can't wait. Now I'd just like a hairstyle that's easy to take care of myself.

I don't get perms. I end up curling my hair when I want it curly. I have really straight hair. One thing that your beautician can do is to cut it a certain way and then you won't have to worry as much as trying to get it to stay the way that you want it to. There are styles that can be done that doesn't take a lot of work. You can look at the books that they have it the beauty shop. They have a variety of different styles in them. You can discuss it with your beautician and ask her which would look the best, be easier to maintain, and one that would cost the least. I have very thick hair so it is hard for me to keep perms. Let me know what you decide and let me see a picture of what it looks like.

My hair is also thick, and I really hate to mess with it myself. Guess I've gotten lazy over the years. I do have a good cut, but I can't seem to make it look as nice as she does. LOL. I'll let you know what I decide and will send you a picture also.

My hair is very fine and very thin, so straight as a board. I use a curling iron the size of my little finger and if I do more than "finger comb" it, out go the curls...unless of course, I have a perm. I've trimmed my own hair my whole life, and given myself home permanents, but it is difficult since I can't stand up over the sink or even the tub..I have to do everything sitting down. So, it has been awhile since I even bothered. Now, I have never heard of a permanent perm! Sounds like just what I would need!

I love my perms. Funnily enough I didn't get many of them when I was employed but now I am retired I can't do without them. I get a "light" perm just enough to give my hair body as I have lots of it but it is very fine.

how permanent can a perm be, though, when hair grows? the chemical does not change the hair that is not yet developed, right? I have really thick and wavy hair.... a perm on me makes me look like a huge hair ball, so I do not get them. I rarely get my hair cut - other than having a friend trim it the only time I had my hair cut in the past 5 years was to donate to locks of love. We are on limited income and I have a difficult time excusing spending so much on myself. Shoot just a trim costs nearly $20. So I will wait till it is down to my hips again and get it cut for the L.O.L donation, once again.

You're lucky your hair is wavy...mine is so straight, but it is thick. I can't imagine having hair down to my hips, but it's great that you donate it to L.O.L. when it's cut. I know that a "permanent" perm is out of the question, it was just an idea that jumped into my head...LOL.

Have you considered just coloring your own hair and highlighting it? That's much easier than avoiding the expense of haircuts. I get my hair cut and then do the coloring myself, which works out very well for me.
