I define it as something we create -- it can be anything, from make-up, clothing, a sketch..or even a story. Something which comes naturally to us, though we work hard to make it. It can be TERRIBLE and be art lol..because we created it, because it embodies an idea. Everyone defines it differently. But how do YOU guys define it?

For me art IS something we create but its something we create from our souls if that makes sense...I can take a pen and scribble on a pc of paper...I created it, but its not art because there is no feeling involved...BUT when my kids were toddlers and THEY would scribble on a pc of paper, then it was art becuase they put so much feeling into it...

I believe art is a creative output based on a thought, image, emotion, or idea that has no fixed means of technique (technique is what can make or break the greatness of the artist's presentation but there can be one and not the other). So it's free form but can also be, and usually is, structured or adapted to fit a certain genre or technique/form (for example, ballet vs. modern dance, classical music vs. country). The creative part that stands alone without the specific structure is usually the artistic part.

Art, in its broadest meaning, is the expression of creativity or imagination, or both.Whatever you do as art must speak something. This is one of the dumbest definition I've ever given.lol.

To me art is like beauty, it is in the eye of the beholder! Art is something that is created to please or maybe to shock! To me no art can be bad as it is an expression of someones feeling and that is important to that person. Although sometimes you do think that some people may be off a different planet if what they produce is not conventional or looks like it's been done by a 3 year old!

Lol that's true, but sometimes those pictures we couldn't imagine people buying are like famous hits -- which is amazing..but I guess it does show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

My definition of art doesn't differ much from your own. I would define art as any creation that is used to express an emotion, belief, or idea. The best art, for me, is the kind that provides a visual representation (whether via paint, the written word, clay, clothing, or even crayon marks on the wall) of an intense emotion. The kind of art where you can look at it and say, "Wow, that just hits me like a bolt of lightening. Boy, do I know what s/he was feeling when s/he created that." I personally use many different mediums in order to epress my art. I use the written word most often, followed closely by my own body (clothing, etc.), the interior decoration of my room, music, and finally colorful pictures (though I am by no means a good artist). For me, art is a way for me to get everything out, so to speak. Through the use of art, I can fully express and experience the breadth of my emotions, ideas, and beliefs. Great conversation Paranoia! :)

Thanks for responding! Yeah, I like that kind of art too..it just seems to grip you, and keeps your attention and thoughts with it awhile :) I use quite a few mediums to express myself too (make-up, photography, painting, sketching, drawing, hair-styling and dye'n, working with wood, cooking, song-writing and story-writing -- but like you I use the written word the most often). I think self-expression keeps people healthier emotionally and mentally..'cause it is using your brain and getting what you feel out of your body and somewhere more visible. Better out than in, right? And I always thought that, regardless what kind of artist one is..their works are beautiful to at least one other person on the planet -- other than themselves. And though people aren't always the best judge of the creative arts, no one in the world doesn't know about art in some way or another..so that says something I think. I don't know WHAT it says exactly, but it says something lol. Anyway, thanks again ^_^

Hi myself can define a art as life. What ever we do we feel we dream is a art. You can say without art man is lifeless. Our inspiration is also a art. . Every beautiful creature is a art.

Art is something of beauty, is something that can cause discussion, it is also something that can cause tears, or show a truth. Art can be watercolor, chalk, charcoal, stone, clay or paint. Heck, even food can become works of art. It is all in how you view it and perceive it.

well, i do think that there is room for art in all those things you list. but some can fall more towards "design." Make up can be art if its more than just covering you so you don't shine... Clothing often falls toward the design side, with being basic coverings & construction. Then you have some pieces that you see on the runway that are pieces of art (but nearly unwearable.) I think most fiction writing, even bad fiction writing is an art, some one had to think & creat the work. I don't think instruction manuels will ever be art - tho I've had to admit getting some that have obviously been translated so badly that they are almost pieces of fiction!

when I was learning to cast a circle and consecrate the things I would be using in a ritual, I learned to refer to certain things as creatures of art. My athame- a creature of art- and it made me realize that everything that doesn't occur directly in earthly nature- like stones and salt and water, once changed is a creature of art. Even a bird's nest is a creature of art. But not a bird's feather. Unless it's been changed somehow.

I define art as an ultimate expression. It is more about the artist creating a piece for expression or purely aesthetic value. It can be a way of life for most of the people and without it the world is incomplete. It's purpose is to produce emotion. Art must have substance, it's not only seen as beautiful but also meaningful. It is also the fundamental characteristics of human as living creature, because other creatures can't create art as we do, right?

Well they may not go through all the trouble we do, but I like to think they create art and can BE living art themselves. They just don't seek out or wish to do it as much as we do. I agree though, art IS the ultimate kind of expression.

I think art is the most important in my life. It is a deep need of comunication, of love, of being understood and valuated by others. It is like something that grows inside me and has to go out, or it would make me explode. It is a natural impulse, like an annimal instict, like any other need as food is for not dying for hunger. It is also the imitation of God, She created te Univere and give it life, so I try to create my art and make it as alive as I can. Thas is for me the meaning of being created in God's image.

To me art is in the eye of the beholder,my personal medium is pine needle baskets. Each and everyone that I create is differant, and expresses what I'm feeling at the time.
