I can understand and even tolerate to an extent if you are shortening long words in sending sms since there is a limit in the amount of characters you can send and to save cost you want to cram as much as you can in one go.
But there are people who use it in emails and even myLot posts. What is the matter with these guys? I mean, it is ok to shorten long phrases like gtg (got to go) or lol (laughs out loud). But "u" for you and "r" for are? come on, they are THREE LETTER WORDS. There don't need to be any shorter!
And than, there is nuisance of the leetSpeak. Good God, sometimes I can't even comprehend sms sent by my friends. Most of the time it takes about 5 complete minutes to just read them. Why don't people just write English the way it is suppose to be written?
I have a message for those who spell that "dat" and great "gr8" :
1f u c4n r34d dis, u re411y n33d t0 g8 a l1f3!!!!

Hahaha!!! That's a good start! Checking and rechecking before hitting the button.
It's funny though, almost all of those who I asked will say they prefer receiving messeges in proper english. But we still get chopped off and cryptic version that take ages to read;)
I too am quite tolerant with short forms in sms. But truth be told, it is double the effort to read them on phone screen, it being small and all, you know.

I totally agree with you. I figure if I can use proper English in both my texts and my discussions, then I think everyone else should. I can understand anyone that is new to the language will at times use shortcuts. Sometimes I think people are just getting lazy and they can't be bothered. lol, I always thought that was lots of love!! Go figure.

I don't think people who are "new" to the language uses short cuts. It's usually those who are already very comfortable with the language who use shortcuts. They don't have the need to make people understand. They just assume people do. Those who are "new" to the language usually take extra care to check spelling and grammar.

Thank you for pointing out how ridiculous some of these things are. I must admit I didn't understand everything you wrote, but I agree with everything I did understand. Two of the things that bother me are "2" instead of to or too and "4" instead of for. Besides the fact that there are only 2 letters in "to", this seems to be leading to an assumption that to and too are interchangable. If it isn't to much trouble, maybe people could learn too tell them apart.
