Do you do good deeds and avoid bad deeds because of their positive/negative effects or just because the bible promotes/prohibits it.?

The Bible does not promote good deeds or prohibit bad deeds, it promotes a living relationship with God, love for God and for all people. By loving God and people, good deeds come naturaly and bad deeds are avoided. Its all obout love, not do's and don'ts.

Neither. You do good and avoid doing evil deeds because, over the long haul, the former bring you closer to God and the latter alienate you from God.

I do something good because I want to, not because the Bible tells me so, or because I'm thinking about heaven. I do good deeds because I like making other people feel good. It just comes naturally to me to want to do what I can...but not too much. I'll do good deeds because I want to, but I won't allow people to take advantage of me.

to me that's like asking the question "woudl you do something illegal or morally wrong if you knew you would never get caught?" and I don't think most people would, Christian or otherwise. Most peoople (save for the odd sociopath here and there) know what's wrong and what's right and try to do what's right just to avoid feeling bad about themselves. It's called our internal moral compass.
