Does a person's avatar weight into your decision to be a friend?

I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover, nor should you jugde a myLotter by their avatar. But I tend to lean towards nice scenes, cute animals, or pretty pictures. I actually avoided being friends with someone because their avatar was creepy. Seeing it next to the discussion made the whole tone of what I was reading seem... creepy! Although it was in interesting topic, I was very turned of my the creepy picture! I have also chosen some of my friends simply because I liked their avatar picture!! Does anyone else do this??

And i guess, since i'm brandishing two knives, i would be an unsophisticated brute with violent tendencies? Then i should change my avatar to a 'happy looking squirrel', heheh..
Nah, i don't judge people from their avatars. Although the choice of avatar does somehow reflect on the person, i rather know who the person is and what he/she stands for. Besides, i make friends with everyone, cute or shady, mean or clean.

Hmm... I laughed at your comment. I guess I'd be a bit hesitant to choose based on this picture. So what's the story behind the knives? OOOo maybe a happy squirrel brandishing the two knives, that might be pretty interesting!! (And no, if you used a word like "brandishing", I wouldn't think you were unsophisticated. You do look kinda scary, though!!)

Well, that time i bought a new camera phone and the next day i saw a discount for these two knives at the utility shop. So camera phone+knives+me equals the picture you see now. And now that you've endorsed the idea, im seriously considering the squirrel avatar, hehehe, you'll never know.

Well, what I would get from this picture is a person wanting to look intimidating and threatening. I pretty much feel anyone holding a knife with that kind of look on their face is intimidating and threatening. I wouldn't hesitate to walk the other direction if I ran into someone like this in a dark alley!!

I just finally figured out last night how to create the avatar. I don't think that a person's choice of an avatar would prevent me from posting on a discussion. I have seen some scary, creepy avatars, but the discussions seemed interesting. I'm trying not to judge anyone just based on their choice of an image for their avatar.
But, as you can see, my avatar is cute! And so is yours!

Yes, yours is cute. Isn't that Puss 'n' Boots? From 'Shrek', right? There is one in particular that I had in mind when I started this discussion. I commented to his post when he responded to a discussion of mine. Then I went to his profile page to see what his discussions were. But that picture looming just gave the whole page a dark overtone, or something, so I didn't stay. He may not have even meant it to be creepy, but to me is was quite so.

I am guilty of this at times. I think it is only natural. People are naturally judgemental. I just don't understand why someone would use something that is offensive or creepy as you say.

And it could just be me. Someone else may look at it and get something totally different out of it.

A person's avatar should not be a reason to accept or deny their request to be your friend, same goes when wanting to be some one's friend. When someone requests to be my friend, I will add or deny him/her based on the discussions or replies, nothing more.
By the way, your kitty avatar is precious!

Thanks!! And for the record, there has only been one person that I didn't want to be their friend, and didn't want to respond to any of their discussions based on their avatar. I always look at discussions and intrest to decide, but I couldn't get that far with this one...

I don't chose people by their avatar. Its like choosing a book by its cover. You wont know what's inside. A person could have a beautiful avatar and be a very mean person.
The only way I'd pick an extra friend is if they used an avatar of a video game or show I'd like and I find the person interesting enough.

I only have one friend right now, so I can't really weigh in on this discussion, but I imagine I would have to agree that a nice picture might interest me more than something creepy or scary. I haven't chosen my own avatar yet, but i'm leaning towards a horse or maybe a pic of myself.

I definatly recommend something soon. Too many people have those silly green default avatars. It's hard to remember if you've talked to a person or not, cuz they look the same as the last one answered... or wait, who was that? Was she the one I responded to or was that the person who made a nasty comment... anyway, you get my point. It's frustrating!

This is a good discussion. I tend to do that too. And there are some people who think if you dont have one your a scammer. I kid you not. Some had a discussion on about people who dont have avatars and he said they must be spammers. At the time I didnt have one. So of course I had write back to him and tell him he was an idiot.LOL

Well, I agree that those people who never get one, kinda look like the people who are just here for the money. They just write as much (or cut and paste) as they can and not put any thought into their profile or their online presence, etc. I know that isn't always the case, but first impressions are so important, it's human nature! Yours is ADORABLE!!!

Sometimes it does push me either way. I try to not be judgmental about avatars, but I do tend to lean towards the cutesy. Well, my wet angry kitty isn't too cutesy, but my old one was. I asked several people to be my friends because of their avatar indirectly. I liked the avatar, explored their discussions and then asked for friendship. I don't prefer creepiness.

I try not to judge a book by it's cover. I have chosen people because of their avatar's but have yet to deny a person for one. Although I can't say that I have actually came across anything that was creepy. I have seen some that I really didn't care for, but since they were just out in the forum it really didn't matter. I hoe that I would look into a person's profile before making a decision and base it on their preferences rather than just a picture. :) I do enjoy the avatars of people the best.

I coose my friends from their interests. If we do not have any interests in common I question why they want to be added to my friends list. I don't care what they look like.I am no prize myself that is why I don't show my pic.

I'm not talking about judging the person. If they have a picture of themselves, that's cool. But most people choose other pictures to represent them. Like a picture of Satan... I would certainly NOT have ANYTHING to do with them!!

I know what you mean..one shouldn't judge by an avatar --but I'm a sucker and seem to be drawn to members here who have cute avatars---like Yours!!--LOL I have cats myself--so anytime I see someone with a cat avatar, bingo--drawn to that person

I suppose a creepy avatar would be a bit of a turn off for me too, but I try not to judge on that basis alone. A person with a creepy avatar may be a great person who just has a warped sense of humour. Mine is a photo my daughter took out a car window of the Manhattan skyline during sunset.

waschit, yours is the kind of avatar that draws me strongly. Whenever I see one like this (Or a cutsie one, of course) I immediatly research to see if we have something in common, then I send the friend request. So I'll be jumping to your profile page now, if that's alright...

I don't pay much mind to their avatar. I have not seen anything provoctive like on many sites, so that is good. I pay more attention to the discussion than the avatar and for the record I hope no one is turned off by my avater. I really do not want to make anyone ill with my mug shot. lol

Ok, I just requested you. Your son is PRECIOUS!! I LOVE the angel wings. And you are in Germany?? I spent time there while I was in the Army. I tried to learn the language, but I was too shy to practice on anyone.
I'm kinda picky when choosing friends. I tend to skip the ones who talk about nonsense stuff, like "What's your hair color" or "Why did you choose the color of your car??" Of course, those people get lots of responses, cuz they're easy. But I try to put some thought into my discussions, if I can...

Absolutely! That is what first catches my eye. If I then like their response, I will probably go check out their profile and see if they are someone close to my age and has a lot of the same interests as I do and will ask to become their friend.

Not at all! If so, you wouldn't be on my list -- cats are predators after all... Just joking! Seriously though, images used as avatars are so subjective. I never know what someone might have been thinking when they chose their avatar. There are plenty on my list whose picture I'm not overly fond of, but some of them post great discussions and answers. If I had said no just because of their picture, I would have missed out on reading what they have to say.

Yeah, but my cute fuzzy little kitten wouldn't hurt your bunny!!! She's sad, though. She's crying inside, so she really isn't a threat to anyone. There are pictures I'm not fond of either, that I just ignore. But this one that I was referring to really got to me. I really don't even know why. I would tell you who it is, but I'd be afraid he'd see... I don't want to offend anyone.

I don't really care about avatars (as I don't have one). I guess other members know me by name because sometimes they would acknowledge me, which is funny because my name is quite long and difficult to remember, perhaps the reason why they would refer to me as "ag". In the same manner, I accept everybody who wants to be my friend here. They are not friends "in person" but virtual friends so for me, it's fine, as long as there's something to discuss here. I'm fully aware that avatars are important in putting in a certain personality to the actual person, and it helps in remembering this person right on, but somehow it worked for me to not have one yet. My only worry is that I owe it to myLot somehow (because I'm already at my 1000th point, and 10-star rating) to already have an avatar. I'm still deciding on a good one. Don't worry, I won't try to scare you. Hehe. Happy myLotting!

Also it differentiates you from the newbies. You aren't a rookie anymore, by a long shot, so you should be proud to show a bit of the 'inner you'! And yes, they do help add personality to the person.

Well, I suppose that we shouldnt judge a book by its cover but on the other hand that avatar is what that person chose to represent them. If they chose something creepy to represent themselves with, does that mean that they are creepy-probably not. but it would seem to me that is how they want to be perceived so I really dont see anything wrong with at least think about who's disscusion I might be posting in.

EXACTLY!!! If they want to be represented by that, then they possibly chose it to say something about their personality. So a dark and creepy picture could mean a person who lets their dark side do most of the talking. So I'm not interested in playing with them! I chose a kitten because I love cats, but also this picture has another message that drew me to it. The words "sometimes when you cry, no one sees your tears" is very poingiant (sp?) to me right now. So it wasn't just a random choice of pictures. I'm sure some people may just put anything, we don't know. But that one particular avatar I saw just really bugged me. Anyone else may look at it and think nothing... so it's probably just me.
