I am tying to grow my own food, we have started with tomoatoes, garlic, spring onions and a few herbs. I would like to start a garden on the permaculture design. Has anyone already done this?

Good for you. I find there is nothing like home grown food, the taste is so vibrant. The food from shops is so bland. I would like to chickens for eggs, but will have to work on building a chicken house first. Would not want the poor little things to get wet.

I know this discussion is a month old, but I wanted to add gardening to my list of interests, and can't seem to do it, without responding to a discussion. I've always grown herbs, but last year I finally had enough space to grow other fruit and vegetables as well. It certainly had its ups and downs. I think I managed to grow 5 strawberries over the summer, but they tasted great. The cucumbers came out looking like baseballs, but also tasted good. The carrots came out looking so bizzare, I wondered if there might be a secret nuclear waste plant nearby. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can grow this summer.

We grow some of our food and plan to grow a lot more when I give up full time work in a year or so. We already grow onions, garlic, rhubarb, herbs, tomatoes and that sort ofthing, I want to grow beans, squash, fruit, potatoes and many other lovelyyumy things. Its so important to be close to the soil and to know exactly where your food has come from these days.

My dad is fond of gardening. He planted a lot of fruit bearing trees here in our backyard. It is quite easy to plant here in the Philippines with the very accomodating climates. He wants to enjoy his retiring day by picking fruits from his own trees. So far, we had good papayas and mangos, some "calamansi" too a local form of lemon, but much smaller, custard apple, and tomatoes. We also have chickens who give us eggs almost everyday . It helps a lot with the budget, and some ducks. We didn't follow any guidelines. Sometimes we even have plants that grew from our vegetables peel, maybe from the seeds with them. And it feels great to grow your own food. Especially for fruits, my daughter loves them. She learned to eat vegetables and fruits because she can see me picked them up from the backyard. Happy gardening to you!(^^,)
